Vista Ultimate (RTM) - Serious problem with IE7

I have had a serious problem with IE7 after installing Vista Ultimate (RTM)
in that while it will launch once, a second and any subsequent launch fails.
If I re-set IE7, I can again get one successful launch, but then the failures
    resume.

After comparing the settings in HKLM\Software before and after the one
successful launch (after which IE7 will fail on launch) I got the hunch to
try unchecking the "Enable Protected Mode" box on the Security tab in
    Internet Settings.
Sure, enough, IE7 worked 'normally' after turning it off. If I turn it on
again, though, IE7 fails as before and I have to reset it to get it working
    again.

So I am looking for help/ideas/suggestions to try to resolve the problem of
why a second launch of IE7 on Vista Ultimate (RTM) after a reset fails if the
Enable Protected Mode box is checked.

Here is a comparison of HKLM/Software before and after the one successful
launch with Protected Mode enabled (after which it will fail until reset):

    Did you do an upgrade?

If so : Go to safe mode and uninstall any drivers (esp. video drivers and in
my case a webcam driver too) that were there (from device manager or
add/remove programs or both) then try letting it redetect the drivers.

Re: Vista Ultimate (RTM) - Serious problem with IE7

I have the solution: Install FireFox 2.0 and simply don not use I.E. 7.0.
Its clear that I.E. 7.0 has problems. ForeFox is faster, has cool addons as
well. I.E. 7.0 is a clear copy cat of FireFox.

I have IE 7 on every machine under my command, which between home and work
is about 15 machines. No problems on any, and Will Z's problem here is
    pretty strange.

In a few weeks IE 7 will have more users than Firefox ever will. Firefox
is actually useful on OS X, because Safari is so lame. But it has no point
on Windows, since Windows already has the best browser.

Dan: I guarantee that FF 2 will load faster than I.E. 7. Try it out for
yourself. I rather like the tabbed browsing more so that with I.E. 7. I can
go to my favs and right click, and choose open in a new tab. This cannot be
done, exactly like that with I.E. 7.0. Besides, imatation is the highest
form of flattery you know...I.E. 7 is clearly a take off from FF.

Hey Will! I have no answer for your problem, just wanted to say hello!
I *still* believe that the old Canopus forum on CompuServe was the best
online forum anywhere, anytime, ever. When I abandoned CIS in '97 or '98
or whenever it was, the last thing I did was to download all of the Canopus
message archives. I still unzip them and read them sometimes - they make
    for fascinating reading today!

Maybe you should ask Steve Barkto about your IE 7 problem! :-)

I don't think most people care about a 1/2 second difference. If you
use Windows to be productive, you probably leave your windows open, so
opening speed is a non-issue. If you're a casual user, you likely
    don't care either way.

That's odd, it works exactly like that here, I just tried it to
confirm. I clicked the star to open my favs, right-clicked on an item,
selected "Open in New Tab" and bingo, a new tab with that page.

Perhaps you're talking about an early beta of IE7 that had lots of
    problems.

If FF was the only other browser with tabs, then I would agree, but
since all web browsers are tabbed now and FF was certainly not the
first to add it, claims of IE7 copying FF tabs are a wild guess at
best. Microsoft is usually slow to adopt, so it was just a matter of
time before tabbed browsing made it to IE anyway.

I concur. I don't know why his setup is having issues opening extra
IE7 windows. I never have less than 2 IE7 windows open, and often have
3-5 open while researching information. And I've been able to open
multiple IE7 windows without serious issues since at least Beta2.

I would recommend a clean reinstall of Vista, then carefully monitor
the situation as drivers and apps are installed. More than likely it's
another app or driver causing a conflict.

IE 7on Vista is the fastest browser you have ever seen, although apparently
you have never seen it. IE 7's tabs work exactly the way you describe, so
again, apparently you have never seen it.
