Premium Home -vs- Ultimate, say it ain't so

Just read a web page listing which version of Vista has which features and
then had a heart attack.

According to http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/...vista_preview/

I will have to pay about $400 for the Ultimate version just to get some
basic features that I will need.

Only the uber expensive Ultimate version of Vista has basic Windows Fax and
Scan included. To me that is BS as everybody needs this every day feature
AFAIAC.

I would also like the image backup and recovery feature and this should be
in all versions to help all Vista owners back up an image of their hard
drive. But Noooo, it is again only available in the $400 Ultimate version.

Somebody please tell me this is not correct.

If it is then it looks like I will stick with XP. Honestly...$400?!? Cmon.

Re: Premium Home -vs- Ultimate, say it ain't so

These functions are also available with Vista Business. Frankly, if you
don't need the MS Media Center stuff and the MS crappy MovieMaker HD and go
with another DVD burning software, just get the Vista Business........

Re: Premium Home -vs- Ultimate, say it ain't so

Gonzo

Just like you I require certain applications that aren't supported by X
version.

After much deliberation, and when I finally decide to upgrade,
I will be going for the Business Edition and using third party
software for the things 'Vista Business' doesn't support.

Overall, I believe it's a safe bet going this way and from what
I can glean from this NG, I will still be able to 'anytime upgrade'
should I require it.

Good luck on your decision.

Re: Premium Home -vs- Ultimate, say it ain't so

Thanks guys but unfortunately Windows Biz version is missing some other
features I need that I did not list.

The Premium home version would have been perfect for me if they just added
those two things.

The Dx10 for gaming thing is a given though so at least it is in every
version as it should be.

We still have time so maybe the final versions will change.

I guess my other option is to get the cheaper Home Prem version and they
start looking for third party fax and image backup software with the money I
saved over the Ultimate edition.

Re: Premium Home -vs- Ultimate, say it ain't so

The rtm version of Vista is the final. There will not be changes between
now and the Jan 30 launch, so go ahead with your decision based on what you
know now.

Re: Premium Home -vs- Ultimate, say it ain't so

Probably cheaper in the long run. For backup, Acronis TrueImage 10 is highly
recommended and Vista compatible. Can't help with fax, unfortunately, as
I've never needed to fax anything from a computer before.

Re: Premium Home -vs- Ultimate, say it ain't so

Symantec/Norton are currently beta testing a Vista backup program that does
both image and file backups. I've tried it and it works under both Vista
x86 and x64. I don't know, and probably am not allowed to say anyway, their
projected release date. I also don't know the pricing. It's at least as
good as the backup program that comes with Vista except, like most Symantec
programs, it hooks into your system all over the place and is a royal pain
to get rid of should you ever wish to.

As for a Vista-compatible fax program, good luck. I've been looking all
over for one. So far, no luck. Symantec's Winfax is dead -- no more
releases -- and the last version 10.0.x is incompatible with Vista.
