| | Explorer: want to open file in Notepad with F4 Hello, how can I assign a key to some action in Explorer? I want to open files in Notepad (SendTo to Notepad) with one button, like F4. Thanks. |

The resulting dialog should default to the 'Shortcut' tab. 4) With the cursor in the 'Shortcut key' field, type whatever key you want to use as the hotkey. Note that if you type a letter such as 'n', windows will place Ctrl + Alt + before it by default. If you desire a different prefix, you can press the keys you wish to use as the prefix, i.e., Shift + n (windows will place Ctrl + by default). And finally, you can press F4 in the shortcut key field. Windows will not place a prefix before an F key, so you can press only F4 and it will bring up notepad. mxh |

| | Re: Explorer: want to open file in Notepad with F4 OK, after re-reading this thread, this was not what you were looking for, but still a good tip, right? I'm not sure if what you want to do can be accomplished, but I just add a shortcut to Notepad to my Send To folder. 1 right click and one left click and the deed is done. You can also use the keyboard, but it requires 3 keystrokes to get the job done. Of course, if it's a text or .ini file, or some other file type associated with Notepad, highlighting the file and pressing 'Enter' will do the job. Or, you could associate other file types with Notepad if you feel that it's important enough to do so. mxh "mxh" <mxh@mmm.com> wrote in message news:%23yv0$ZzHHHA.4896@TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl... > > "Vista newbie" <Vista newbie@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > news:C48C449A-0EBA-4862-A6AB-2F079885D173@microsoft.com... >> Hello, >> >> how can I assign a key to some action in Explorer? >> I want to open files in Notepad (SendTo to Notepad) with one button, >> like F4. >> >> Thanks. > > > 1) In C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\, > create a folder called "Desktop Shortcuts" (minus quotes). > > 2) Place shortcuts to all items for which you desire a hotkey in the new > folder. > > 3) To create the hotkey, right click on a shortcut & choose Properties. > The resulting dialog should default to the 'Shortcut' tab. > > 4) With the cursor in the 'Shortcut key' field, type whatever key you want > to use as the hotkey. > > Note that if you type a letter such as 'n', windows will place Ctrl + Alt > + before it by default. | | Re: Explorer: want to open file in Notepad with F4 Yes, now I can open Notepad with F4. But in Explorer, it does not open the highlighted file. Btw, I added link to Notepad to C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo\ folder, and now I have it in sendto right-click menu. The question is, how to assign this send-to-notepad functionality to F4? Mouse navigation through cascading menu (with its sometimes unpredictable delays etc.) requires attention and accuracy... Thanks...
