Vista Ultimate RTM, IE7, and Protected Mode Dance

I posted this in the beta sections, too. Sorry for the cross-post, but I
don't know where to post this since neither Vista nor IE7 are beta any
longer. This was the best place I could find. Basically, I just wanted to
pass along some feedback that IE7 in Vista is going to cause a lot of
problems.

I think this is caused by the Protected Mode option in IE7 under Vista. The
problem is with sites that have both secure and non-secure areas. For
instance, in the TechNet site itself, I had a devil of a time accessing the
various subscriber areas. I could sign in just fine. But, when I tried to
go to some subscriber areas, I'd end up with different browser sessions and
different tabs in different browser sessions popping open as I went through
the non-secure main page, the secure sign-in, the non-secure web page, the
secure place I was trying to get to, etc. I had similar experiences on other
sites requiring a sign-in for a subset of the site. The real killer was
Amazon, though. I fought my way through all the extra sessions/tabs to add
various things to my cart. Unfortunately, when I tried to check out, I flat
out couldn't. When I went from the non-secure cart to the secure sign-in,
another browser session opened and Amazon couldn't keep the things
coordinated. Essentially, all I could get was a "not authorized" message for
the check-out. At that point, I installed Firefox 2.0 and finished my
shopping without fuss. Embarrassingly enough, Firefox handled the TechNet
site far better than did IE7.

I'm not trying to get into a Firefox vs IE flame war, here. I just wanted
to get some feedback in before the official release with the hope that
Microsoft could try to fix something. My apologies if this is the wrong
forum.

Why not just turn off protected mode for that particular browsing session?

Double click (like it says) on the protected mode on area in the bottom bar.
Restart I.E. Do what you have to do. Then turn it back on.

RE: Vista Ultimate RTM, IE7, and Protected Mode Dance

I'm sorry, but I have Vista Ultimate TRM, went to Amazon and ordered a game
for my son, all within one IE7 window/session. I did not have to fight my
way through multiple screens/browser windows or anything. I will admit that
many of the graphics did not appear, but I have seen that happen with Firefox
as well.

I also do not have any issues with Technet site on Vista. For that matter,
I'm writing this message on a Vista machine.

RE: Vista Ultimate RTM, IE7, and Protected Mode Dance

After seeing your reply, I thought about what could be causing the difference
in behavior. The only thing I could think of was that I had put the https
Amazon site into the Trusted Site list (ditto for TechNet). So, I cleared
out the Trusted Sites list and went to Amazon. It looks like that fixed it
(I didn't actually buy anything, but up to that point, everything looked
good). TheTechNet site is also much better behaved now. I guess the problem
is with Trusted Sites that contain both https and http segments. That's not
quite as bad as I thought. Thanks for the reply.
