Any speed gain in 64?

Will I see any performance speed up with vista 64?

I have a 4400 x2, 7800gt, and 2 gb good pc3200 ram.

thanks

Re: Any speed gain in 64?

Depends on the program. Most 32bit programs will see a slight gain or no
gain. Some content creation software will benefit from the greater headroom
on a 64bit cpu (more and larger caches, etc).

Re: Any speed gain in 64?

I would caution anyone to go with Vista x64 at this moment.

Basically there is no protection available from virus attacks and a whole
bunch of drivers seem to malfunction to the point where the OS becomes quite
unstable. I know Microsoft is working hard on these compatibility issues
and I keep testing with x64 although I run x32 for my work environment
(build 6000).

So unless you plan on running SQL queries and/or abusing your processing
power with CAD applications I would at this moment hold off on the 64 bit
version. I am also reporting all issues I find with my hardware endeavors
to MS of course.

Happy holidays!

Al

Re: Any speed gain in 64?

What do you mean by no protection from virus attacks? Antivirus programs
for Vista x64 are available from CA and Trend with links right in the Vista
Security Center for subscribing. Several other AV solutions work with Vista
x64 as well.

Which drivers are you referring to that are malfunctioning? Vista x64
requires signed, 64bit drivers precisely to ensure stability. It is true
that a lot of devices do not have 64-bit drivers but that is the
responsibility of the manufacturers.

I use both 32bit and 64bit Vista and the 64bit edition is as rock solid as
XP Pro x64.

Complete balderdash!

There are several good anti-virus programs that run under Vista 64.
I have yet to find a driver that makes my 3 systems "unstable", especially
since Vista now requires drivers to be signed.

There is no validity to the post above. I have 2 desktops and a laptop
running Vista 64 Premium, and none of them has *ANY* of the issues cited.

Re: Any speed gain in 64?

Avast, among many others, offers full antivirus that is compatible with
Vista x64. Malfunctioning drivers? Nope, not here.

Re: Any speed gain in 64?

I use Avast which runs fine on Vista64. I have hardware that has drivers
(built-in) in Vista64 which never got drivers in XP X64 (my Canon). All
that had drivers for X64 work with built-in drivers in Vista64.

Re: Any speed gain in 64?

Specifically, using RC1 in two boxes, one with nvidia 6600 and the other with
ATI 9700. Have had NO problems with either, except, that one must use the
nvidia drivers with WDDM qualification if you expect to avoid trouble.

Both OS's do not like Promise 378 RAID drivers, but have installed them and
they have not produced any instability.

HP printer drivers originally were few and far between. Even RC1 has most
all their drivers and they work.

The truth of the matter is: you can force Vista to be a good 'boy' by
discontinuing driver signing. There is nothing wrong with most of the
drivers you choose, as the adverse reaction to unsigned drivers is only due
to code placed in the driver to allow acceptance.

Re: Any speed gain in 64?

You can disable driver signing. Sweet tip. I can't get the ATI installer to
install its drivers. I have to do it manually. The MS driver caused tearing
in my games and I had to go with the ATI beta drivers.
