My problems with Vista Ultimate, premium.

Who know which one I have. I has media center but not remote desktop.

1. The UAC is a nag. They should of named it Wife Beta.
2. The lack of WHQL drivers sucks.
3. The huge amount of services that are running by default is a huge perf
hit. Balck Viepr where are you.
4. IE7 is a huge hog. But atleast you right click the IE Icon to run it
without addons. Still not up to firefox speed though.
5. I don't know who to blame when Ventrillo accepting a key press to
activate when BF2 starts.
6. You have to go into the shortcut properties for all your games and run
them as administrator if they use punkbuster. Otherwise you get kicked from
servers with the error "You don't have required O/S privileges"
7. I still show a device failing in device manager with random letters and
no idea what it is.
8. Getting to folder options from within the folder is random. Sometimes the
options are on the menu bar sometimes not.
9. The new program data folder which is hidden by default makes uninstalling
apps a headache. Install program, doesn't work uninstall, new version comes
out reinstall. Ooops I forgot to manually delete the Programs settings or
anyother data it needs from the hidden "Program Data folder" Uninstall
program, delete programs data folder from "Program Data". Reninstall program.
Program still does not work. Hmmm Where else is Vista hiding files from the
first install.

I am sure it will get better but it just isn't anywhere near ready for
release to retail. I expect all of us to be heading over to our firends and
relatives when they go to Vista and help them frequently. This is not a user
friendly system.

you really cant say its not user friendly when the things youre complaining
about will rarely come up for the "normal" user

Re: My problems with Vista Ultimate, premium.

So the normal user doesn't install software. I must have a lof of advanced
users around me. My mother inlaw has a half dozen printer software packages
installed. For printers she doesn't even own. A half dozen "WebSearch
toolbars", IM programs, weather toolbars and pciture viewers installed. I'm
constantly cleaning those up. And here I thought she was your typical "Normal
User" grandma. I guess I'll see if our IT dept needs a new Network admin.

Re: My problems with Vista Ultimate, premium.

1.) Turn UAC off.
2.) Patience.
3.) Turn off services you don't need.
4.) Don't use IE7.
5.) Probably Ventrilo.
6.) Run them as administrator.
7.) Find out what that device is.
8.) Alt > Tools > Folder Options? Haven't noticed it missing...will look.
9.) That's an application developer's problem.

People, as a whole, are generally very impatient. The vast majority of
people that will rush out and upgrade to Vista when it hits shelves are
power users that will be able to solve their own problems. Grandma isn't
running to the store to buy Vista for it's purported security features. By
the time it actually hits a great number of mainstream, "normal" users,
there will almost certainly be a Service Pack or equivalent patch.

Re: My problems with Vista Ultimate, premium.

hmmm. Do you have a link to the new Keyboard shortcuts for vista? It is great
that I can click Alt to get to the menu. But why isn't there something
available to click on to get that menu. This is not good UI programming.
Someone should be able to see what they need visually. At a minimum it should
work like most toolbars. If something is missing from a toolbar you should be
able to right click it to see the optional commands. IE the taskbar. Right
click it and you can add the desktop bar, the adress bar... Right click the
menubar in IE and you get similar functionality. Now in explorer you get
zilch. I think when Granny calls I'll be setting everything to classic view
so I can spend less time on the phone pulling my hair out.

Thanks for the Alt tip though. I set my view to show
the menu always.

Not a good starting point, this...

> 1. The UAC is a nag. They should of named it Wife Beta.

You may
a. disable it, and it won't bore you anymore. You'll get all the same
security problems of windows XP, however.
b. run Linux, and learn that setting up two different user accounts, one
priviledged and the other not, is considered pure normality among
serious OS users. They sudo. We click OK on UAC windows.

> 2. The lack of WHQL drivers sucks.

Welcome to the real world, Neo: here we have to wait the actual release
of an operating system, in order to get drivers for it.

Why don't you simply disable all them?

So use Firefox insted as I do. What's the matter?

Maybe Ventrillo.

Just install them starting from your user folder, it's there exactly for.

Is your PC so complex you can't even notice what's wrong? Oh, sorry, I
forgot you aren't even able to understand what version of Vista you have
installed, sorry

Organise > Layout > Menu bar (sorry if I'm wrong, I use italian Vista).
You may also use alt key to make menu bar appear.

Never had this problem uninstalling applications. Maybe you'd better
look at "Junctions" on google.

Yes, I'm also expecting lots of people asking stupid questions about
their own dumb habits, and why they can't simply continue using them on
the new operating system. :/

Re: My problems with Vista Ultimate, premium.

Each of the "problems" you listed has an explanation, bro. (See others'
posts) I'd say its better to read and understand things before drawing your
own conclusions. If you don't know what edition of Vista you're running, you
are in no shape to say things like:

>This is not a user
> friendly system.

> I am sure it will get better but it just isn't anywhere near ready for

....etc

Windows Vista is a great product and there has been a lot of thought and
effort that has gone behind putting it together. Its not something that came
from the garage. I suggest you take some time to get used to Windows - dont
forget the F1 key.

BTW, I've got my granny using Windows Vista and she loves it.

Re: My problems with Vista Ultimate, premium.

Don't be such a hater Paolo.

I never had any security problems with XP. And you had user accounts in XP.

I have no problem with the learning curve. It just surprises me that the OS
which is advertised as being the center of the home and for the family is so
difficult to use.

And if you knew much about services you would know you can't disable all of
them. I hope people don't follow that brilliant advice. Disable RPC and I
doubt you'll get far.

As far as drivers go. I blame the hardware vendors for that. They have had a
long time to have them ready.

I do use firefox. Or atleast until I get to a page that needs IE.

I don't mind answering questions that might be dumb to you. But software
should expand on what the user is used to. Previous generations of Windows
have taught me that if I don't see something on a menu or toolbar then right
click to see additonal features and properties. Not that idea is used
randomly. So granny will have to pitch her "Right click" post it with a
"Press Alt or go into organize" post it.

As far as the versions go. I think they should pitch home, Have an Windows
Vista MCE, Vista Business and Vista Server.

And us gamers can only hope that someday they'll have a stripped down Gaming
edition. With the minimum services, minimum fonts, no themes, no games. No
drivers for every possible hardware device. But I have a 360 so I really
don't need a pc for gaming anymore.
