Corrupted Media Player - How do i repair???

I have installed windows vista ultimate and things were going fine
until yesterday when i tried to play a streaming video that uses
windows media player activex control (using IE7). For some reason when
i try to play any webcast that uses windows media player i see a cross
in the player frame. I can not play any video online and IE does not
care to tell me whats wrong?
I do not login as administrator until unless required and i was
wondering what could have happened to make the media player or prolly
IE7 in a bad state?

I tried searching on the web but i could not find any way to repair or
reinstall windows media player on vista. Appreciate your help.

Regards
rohit

Any error? How about at eventvwr.msc in run box>enter>click applicaitons
scroll down to time of problem or WMP as source and do same for system.

Did you try a system restore to when things were find (use several points
if necessary)?

Rohit:
If you're using RC2 the beta codec package has expired.

Re: Corrupted Media Player - How do i repair???

I don't see any error pertaining to Media Player but i did see an entry for
"wmpnetsvc" with some error code. I am currently away from my computer and
can not post the error code very now. I remember i could not search any value
for the error code. Could this be the problem? i remember yesterday i could
not start this service. The service stops the moment it starts logging in
this error code.

I will post the trace in a short while. Thanks for the reply.

Re: Corrupted Media Player - How do i repair???

Hi Dennis,

I got the pre-released vista from MSDN universal subscription. i suppose
that is not the problem. I could view videos hosted on channel9 etc 2-3 days
back without any problem and i don't remember doing anything nasty on the dev
machine.

Re: Corrupted Media Player - How do i repair???

Rohit--

This doesn't sound like then, any special codec problem. It may not help,
but won't hurt so run sfc /scannow from an elevated cmd prompt and see if
there's any joy.

Re: Corrupted Media Player - How do i repair???

I should add, that in the absense of error messages which can be very
helpful with WMP, in XP I could often fix things by reinstalling WMP. Vista
hoever, won't let you do that--it'll tell you it's there already.

Re: Corrupted Media Player - How do i repair???

So it means if by some chance if media player is corrupted there is no way to
reinstall or atleast repair it... If this is the case I am sure no one would
like to install vista. I can't believe that there is no way to repair windows
media player

Re: Corrupted Media Player - How do i repair???

Okay i did scan my disk for errors and i found two EA's. Now when i ran
windows media player through IE activex i see the following error in error log

Service 'WMPNetworkSvc' did not start correctly because
CoCreateInstance(WindowsMediaPlayer) encountered error '0x8007007e'. If
possible, reinstall Windows Media Player.
