Windows Vista Sidebar

Hi,

Will the very nice functionality with the tool sidebar from Vista be
available to XP?

I think RSS feeds with just that sidebar will revolutionize how information
is presented!

Yahoo has "Widgets" that do pretty much the same thing.

It already is available in the Vista Transformation Pack for Windows XP. I
have my XP install transformed to look like Vista with this pack.

RE: Windows Vista Sidebar

Take a look at the Desktop Side bar from http://www.desktopsidebar.com/.
It VERY close to the desktop sidebar in Vista.

Re: Windows Vista Sidebar

Actually, I think that it is better than Vista's. I was really impressed
with the weather panel, hover the mouse over it and it expands to show much
more information. And there's one for Messenger that rocks.
Vista's will get better as time goes on.

Re: Windows Vista Sidebar

I think SideBar gadgets are just going to open new doors for purveyors of
spyware and adware.

As existing spyware applications such as WeatherBug have overflowed the
notification area of Windows (sometimes incorrectly referred to as the
system tray), there was a need for more room for such applications. The
SideBar fills the bill perfectly.

While SideBar gadgets are supposedly just HTML pages, they install with real
installation programs with the ability to put anything the author wants onto
your computer. Then, once running, SideBar gadgets have full access to your
file system! This is really strange since I can't create a test web page
myself on my own desktop and get it to even run a script without changing
security settings in IE but an application provided by a third-party,
disguised as a web page, gets full access to my file system.

Granted, there will be some safe and fun gadgets provided by hobbyists but
there will be a lot of them that are not. Any commercial application that
you don't pay for is being paid for by someone or something. Be very
suspicious!

Thanks Dale, that's really good advice, something to be very watchful of.
