Any opinions from Linux users?

Just curious what y'all think of Vista, compared to other versions of Windows.

Mention your distro if/when you share your opinion, yes?

I am running Ubuntu 6.10 on a trial basis -- i.e., to determine if it is a
solid enough platform so I can get rid of Windows altogether. So far, it
looks promising. It is efficient and stable, with the polished look of
commercial software. It's possible to skin it out with something called
"Beryl" to get glitzy effects, but the default desktop looks and functions
just fine.

From what I have seen of and heard about Vista, I don't think I will ever
want to use it or anything like it. Vista would give Microsoft too much
control over my computer and the information stored on it. I have no
reason to think MS (or any large, impersonal corporation) would use that
control with discretion or consideration of my best interests.

Re: Any opinions from Linux users?

I don't feel like Microsoft has any control of my computer at all. I
understand the EULA and follow it, simple enough. I'm not even sure what you
mean by MS control over the information stored on your computer. Any control
they have they would use with discretion because they also deal with
governments and businesses.

So, do you mean UAC, WGA, or something that you believe is 'hidden'? WGA is
simple enough, follow the EULA. Besides, I have nothing to hide. If you
mean something 'else', well, it is probably not there. DRM? Again, follow
the rules and you will be fine. It really isn't as difficult as some like to
make it seem. It gets them attention.

I won't get into Linux because I think it is pretty irrelevant right now. I
was forced to use Linux while doing research at LSU this past summer. It was
nice, but certainly not bug free and easy to use.

Well, you are sitting in front of a 6 Billion dollar machine at $399. It is
a pretty expensive machine.

I'm not your typical Linux user. I love Linux, but I don't hate
Windows. I don't like some of Microsoft's business practices (past and
present) but I like Windows and honestly I *love* Vista and I've got it
pre-ordered from Amazon.com

With that said, I currently dual-boot with Ubuntu Linux and I love it
too. I see no reason to stick with just one OS. In fact I'll probably
be adding FreeBSD to the mix here pretty soon.

I've run several Linus distros in the past, including Mandrake (now
Mandriva), SUSE, RedHat, Fedora Core, Debian and now Ubuntu.
And I've been a Windows user since the 3.1 days and have run 3.1, 95,
98SE, 2000 and XP. Stability wise, I've been very happy with Windows
since 2000 (the first "next generation" NT-based Windows). Unlike some
people (I'd love to know what software they run) I almost *never* get a
BSOD (Win 9X was another story). In the past 6 years I've found both
Linux and Windows equally (un)stable.

I'm going by what I have read in this group and in the mainstream media.
Apparently MS has the ability to reduce the functionality of the OS if the
user doesn't jump through the proper set of hoops. That implies the
ability to examine a user's system. I don't know what eavesdropping
capabilities are built into Vista, but they might be extensive, and I don't
trust any big corporation to tell the truth if it is not in their interest
to do so.
