Vista - Need advice

Need advice

Per PC Magazine, they don't recommend anyone upgrading to Vista at this time
if they have a functioning XP system. However, they do recommend using it
on a new system.

I am currently using a Dell Laptop with XP Pack 2. I just bought a fully
loaded Dell due tomorrow which has XP but with a optional upgrade to Vista
prior to 3/31. I use my laptop to run a small online business.

I am going to use CA DNA Migration to move my data from one to the other so
my question is threefold:

First, should I upgrade to Vista before migrating many gigs over?

Second, should I migrate, use the system and then move over to Vista when
comfortable with new machine?

Third, forget Vista altogether - the free upgrade isn't worth the trouble.

Thanks,

Fred

Re: Need advice

Don't believe everything you've read about upgrading
to Windows Vista. I've upgraded several Windows XP
installations to Windows Vista and have yet to have
any problems other than making sure the antivirus program
is Vista compatible.

My advice, which will probably be shot down in flames:

If you are happy with XP, and there are no specific features in Vista that
you want/need then stick with XP for the time being. Give Vista 6 months or
so, until the first Service Pack is released, and the initial bugs and
problems have been discovered and hopefully fixed, then make a decision on
whether you want to upgrade or not...

Just noticed the bit about 31-March...

Does it have to be INSTALLED before then, or just ordered? If you can order
it but not install it, you might as well order it, but otherwise stick to my
suggestion. If it must be installed before the end of March, makes it a
slightly more tricky decision. Even so, I'd defer it as long as possible so
that you can see what happens when Vista is fully released and starts being
used by a wider user-base...

Answered in another newsgroup. Please do not send the same message
separately to more than one newsgroup (called multiposting). Doing so just
fragments the thread, so someone who answers in one newsgroup doesn't get to
see answers from others in another newsgroup. And for those who read all the
newsgroups the message is multiposted to, they see the message multiple
times instead of once (they would see it only once if you correctly
crossposted instead). This wastes everyone's time, and gets you poorer help
than you should get.

If you must send the same message to more than one newsgroup, please do so
by crossposting (but only to a *few* related newsgroups).

Please see "What is the accepted way to share a message across multiple
newsgroups?" at http://smjg.port5.com/faqs/usenet/xpost.html

Good post Mr. Blake.

Polite, informative, useful, non-dictatorial, not smug, not condescending, not
patronizing.

Other <sigh> MVPs <sigh> should follow your fine example.

Re: Need advice

There is no definitive answer to that question.
Each person has to decide for themselves if an upgrade is
desirable.
Driver availability, program compatibility, cost, etc.
