| | Vista Ultimate (32bit) Version 6.0 (Build 5840) Hello, just got a copy of Vista Ultimate (32 Bit), among other things, from an MS launch event here in Los Angeles. I have two questions: 1. The version # says that it is 6.0, Build 5840. Is this the RTM build? 2. The CD sleeve says that it is a pre-release, evaluation copy, and Microsoft's email to me says that I will gain access to an 180-day trial version of Vista. However, winver did not say anything regarding the time limit. When I activated this thing, it did not say anything about the time limit, either. Anyone has any idea on this? Is this a 180-day trial version? Thanks! |

| | Re: Vista Ultimate (32bit) Version 6.0 (Build 5840) Hi, That is a prerelease version, it is not the final code (build 6000), not RTM. Once installed and activated, you can use it up until the end of May. -- Best of Luck, Rick Rogers, aka "Nutcase" - Microsoft MVP http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ Windows help - www.rickrogers.org "broccolibeef" <broccolibeef@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:40D02D6E-55AF-47B0-9630-4E0F1A2FCB30@microsoft.com... > Hello, just got a copy of Vista Ultimate (32 Bit), among other things, > from > an MS launch event here in Los Angeles. | | Re: Vista Ultimate (32bit) Version 6.0 (Build 5840) Vista Final is build 6000. Judging by a Google search, it was only meant for beta testing. But, it should be either the 180 day or the 365 day version. -- Dustin Harper dharper@vistarip.com http://www.vistarip.com "broccolibeef" <broccolibeef@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:40D02D6E-55AF-47B0-9630-4E0F1A2FCB30@microsoft.com... > Hello, just got a copy of Vista Ultimate (32 Bit), among other things, > from > an MS launch event here in Los Angeles. Google? That is my enemies' favorite line: I should have googled instead of having asked the question here or anywhere! In other words, I don't even have the basic skills of googling to find the answers to my own questions! I had googled before I had asked the question here. Here is the build # of Vista RTM in this link--Windows Vista Releases To Manufacturing (RTM) Final Version: 6000.16386.061101-2205 The link is: http://www.vistafans.com/thread-60737-1-1.html So the build # of my copy of Vista Ultimate--Version 6.0, Build 5840--is clearly different from the build # in the above link here! In other words, my copy of Vista Ultimate does NOT have the RTM code! And this seems to have been borne out by some of the things I have experienced in the installation and one to two hours' use of the OS. First, during the installation, I was greeted with about 7 to 8 instances of blank screen. I thought something wrong was happening. A copy with RTM code should be stabler than this! Second, it does not come with any driver for my Creative Audigy 2 Value, which shocked me as well! Third, when I attempted to install the latest version of Nero--7751, Nero insisted on installing the latest version of Direct X 9.0c! LOL! Vista has Dx 10, but Nero installation insisted on installing Dx 9 c to replace it! At first I thought this might be a bug within the latest version of Nero--in the earlier version of Nero, 9950A, there was this problem as well. So I shot Nero tech support an email, reporting and complaining this problem! In lieu of what I see now, I think the problem described here is due to the fact that my copy of Vista Ultimate does NOT have the RTM code! Kind of disappointed, as I thought I was going to save money by obtaining a free or evaluation copy from the launch event! But will recover, just like I have with my enemies' insult of me! Have a nice day! |

| | Re: Vista Ultimate (32bit) Version 6.0 (Build 5840) The "Version 6.0" means NT 6. That will never vary for Vista. (Windows 2000 is always 5.0, XP x86 is always 5.1, and XP x64 is always 5.2). The final build (rtm) of Vista is 6000. Anything before 6000 is pre-release software and is evaluation software (time-bombed to stop working). | | Re: Vista Ultimate (32bit) Version 6.0 (Build 5840) Thanks for the answer! I wonder if you know if there is difference in features between Build 5840 and the 6000 RTM Build? Also, did you experience the problem of the latest version of Nero 7751 forcing you to install Dx 9.0c on Vista? Thanks again for the answer! "Colin Barnhorst" wrote: > The "Version 6.0" means NT 6. | | Re: Vista Ultimate (32bit) Version 6.0 (Build 5840) No difference in features. Vista was feature-locked starting with RC1 (5600). Maybe even with the later builds of Beta 2. There are some changes (bug fixes). One I know of concerned NTFS. There is no released list of such changes. MS doesn't do that. The key thing about any build before 6000 is that is pre-release and I assume time-bombed and it does not qualify for upgrade edition pricing. Any upgrade has to be done with a full retail edition.
