Heavy HDD Usage at startup

I am running Vista Ultimate. I just installed Windows Messenger and VS2005
and now when I startup, Messenger freezes (can't even stop it via Task
Manager) I ran msconfig to prevent it from loading Messenger but even with
that change, when I startup, the HDD goes almost non-stop for more tnan five
minutes? I don't have any apps running and task manager shows very low usage
(2 - 6 pct) for a couple of processes. What might be causing this heavy HDD
usage at startup?

Re: Heavy HDD Usage at startup

Your situation with Messenger may involve something else, but common
causes of such a busy HDD are 1) indexing, and 2) Vista checking the
CD/DVD drive(s) for disks once per second. The former is a common
complaint among Vista users. The latter specifically had me thinking
that something was wrong with my new system, until a helpful soul here
pointed out this Windows "feature" of incessant checking of CD/DVD
drives (which I proved to myself by temporarily disconnecting both of mine).

Re: Heavy HDD Usage at startup

OK, thanks. I'll keep an eye out to see if that is it.

Re: Heavy HDD Usage at startup

Indexing, Readyboost caching and superfetch all run at start up, these take
up a lot of background loading and memory and are nothing to worry about,
you can still use your pc normally. The aim here is that your PC's can just
use sleep mode from now on so these kind of processes on start up no longer
need to concern people.
