How can I repair Vista

I cannot login so I should try to repair (reinstall-update) it.
However Vista doesn't allow me to upgrade-update-repair-whatever...
and says run setup from Windows : P
My Windows is dead!

Did I skip anything? What do you suggest?

Background info: I cannot logon. Vista logon/welcome screen doesn't appear
but mouse icon appears on a black screen. I couldn't examine
where Vista stuck.

Re: How can I repair Vista

Have you tried pressing "ctrl+alt+del" to see if taskmanager comes up ?

That might give you some sort of a clue as to what is going on, And what is
running and what's not running
