| | backing up saved email for transfer to vista I have about 215 messages in my outlook express that I'd like to be able to have if/when I transfer to Vista. In the past, when I've reloaded an XP system I merely backed up the outlook express .dbx files, then when the new XP install was up and working, I'd put the backed up files back in place in the same folder they resided in before, so Outlook express would see them, and I had my saved email from the old system, as well as new mail. Since Vista users a whole different program now called windows mail, is there any way that I'll be able to transfer this archived mail I have in to Vista's mail program or am I stuck viewing my saved email in windows XP? Thanks. |

| | Re: backing up saved email for transfer to vista Most have reported that the import procedure for OE works also in WinMail. So copy all the dbx files for each Identity and then put them in a subdirectory on the hard drive of the Vista machine. Make sure the files are not read only, as it won't work otherwise. Also make sure folders.dbx is in the directory or it won't work either. Then use File | Import | Messages and choose OE6 format and choose to import from a directory and point to that directory and it should work. See also www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx If it doesn't then the recourse is to use my dbx extract programs to get the eml files and those you can easily just drag into WinMail folders. If you are updating then some say the File and settings transfer wizard also works, but regardless I'd make a backup of any important data first. steve "p2pdude" <filesharing@is.good> wrote in message news:Xns98C762891A387filesharingisgood@207.46.248.16... >I have about 215 messages in my outlook express that I'd like to be able > to have if/when I transfer to Vista. With a fully updated WinXP active, I've inserted the Vista disk into the drive. Things happen. Things are installed. Presumably things are uninstalled. When this process is completed, will I still be able to access all my XP-archived messages and other OE settings from WinMail? Or is there some other procedure that I must initiate? -- Bob, who will (of course) double-backup everything, just in case http://www.kanyak.com > Most have reported that the import procedure for OE works also in WinMail. > > So copy all the dbx files for each Identity and then put them in a > subdirectory on the hard drive of the Vista machine. | | Re: backing up saved email for transfer to vista I have not tried the procedure so I don't know how well the upgrade goes. Check other posts in the vista.mail NG I'm xposting to. Certainly backup the messages and settings first, but what I've been told is that the File and settings transfer wizard works okay. Also using iaf files has been reported to work. steve "Opinicus" <gezgin@spamcop.net> wrote in message news:12rskqcf40doa70@news.supernews.com... > "Steve Cochran" <scochran@oehelp.com> wrote > > Excuse the top-posting, everyone, but this is the best way to ask this > question. > > With a fully updated WinXP active, I've inserted the Vista disk into the > drive.
