Dell Dimension HW MB failure

Hello everybody,

After only 14 months my Dell Dimension (MB I think) has increduously failed.
Given that this is the first non self-snapped together PC I owned I have
decided to salvage what's left in the Dell (RAM, Vid card, SATA HDs, PS, DVD)
and put together a new PC. The new PC will have new Intel MB (765G chipsset,
a Multimedia MB), a new Intel Core Dual CPU, and a new case.

My questions are:

a) Will Vista (Ultimate x64) be able to boot after having the MB and the CPU
swapped out from under it? (The MB change is incremental one from Intel and
not a radical departure from the old Dell MB, the old CPU is a Pentium 4 3.0
GHz dual core, and not a 1.86 Ghz Conroe Core Dual though I understand the
Core Dual is supposed to be faster?)

b) I guess this means I will haved to activate again after less than a week
and probably by phone! Is this true?

Thanks for your help.

Seas:

I have a Dell Dimension 9100.

Can you run the Dell diagnostics utility?

Compare the power connections from your power supply to those of the new MB.

Work the Dell support forums for ideas.

Re: Dell Dimension HW MB failure

Don't worry about the activaton. It will work. If all else fails, you can
call in by phone. That doesn't take but a few minutes.

Re: Dell Dimension HW MB failure

If the OS is bought OEM, the license is tied to the CPU and mobo, so
swapping out the two would require you to purchase another license to remain
legitmate.

That said, you probably can get it all working and activated with little
trouble. You may have to do a phone activation. Be careful what you say.

Re: Dell Dimension HW MB failure

Hey everybody,

Thanks for the advice. The XP Home was Dell OEM but I bought Vista Ultimate
Full on Tues. What about Vista? Excellent, an OS that I call art it's so well
thought out. I just bought a Home Premium Upgrade I'm going to install on my
Toshishba Portege M200 Tablet PC even though it can't do Aero because I'm so
impressed. The tablet & mobile improvements make it worth the 50 USD.

The Dell MB fried yesterday (HW usually does that in winter the dry and &
temp fluctuations exposes bad QC quickly) & I actually got the same answer
from Dell's online diag troubleshooter as what I supposed (the machine just
cut off & can't be powered up despite removal of everything that draws power.
The flea LED on MB is lit). Oh well, I got an updated HW for 400 USD but I'll
be waiting for a decent price DX10 vid card.

Honestly, which vid cards are better nVidia or ATI for 3D? i heard negative
things about ATI 3D but I always take things with a grain of salt unless it
sounds like an independent evaluation.

Thanks again.

Re: Dell Dimension HW MB failure

The people at AMD ATI say their cards are the best and that one should buy
their top-of-the-line for best performance and best feature set - you can
take their word on it because they are AMD ATI.

Saucy Lemon

Oh wait, the nVidia crowd has something to say about what the ATI team said
... let be just cock my ear a bit to hear ...

I reckon that Nvidia is better graphic because it has better SLI.
