Vista - Outlook as Windows Mail Default

Well, I've been around the block on this and can't get it to work the same
way Outlook Express and MS Outlook 2003 worked under XP.

I have no email account configured in Windows Mail. I only use it for
newsgroups.

In OE6, with XP, I used to be able to click on "reply" (email directly to
sender) OE would send the email out using MS Outlook. It seems, no matter
how I set the default programs in Windows Mail, I cannot replicate that
behavior.

Each time I try this, the Windows mail editor comes up (not Outlook) and
later forces me into the "create mail account" wizard since I have no mail
accounts setup in Windows Mail.

Any hints? Is this supported?

I was never able to get it to work either, so eventually just set up a mail
account in Windows Mail, only configuring the outgoing server. This allows
me to send from Windows Mail when replying via e-mail to a newsgroup post,
or forwarding one, but prevents Windows Mail from downloading any e-mail.

Thanks Tom. Just as I suspected I guess. Drats! I'll probably do the same as
you. Unfortunately, this also prevents your Outlook mailbox from saving a
"sent" copy too. Oh well...

Secret is to set up Outlook in Internet Options as your default mail program.
Look for"Default Programs" in Vista.

That is not going to do what Frankster wants.

Also, the easiest way to reach "Default Programs" is
right there on the Start Menu.

Secret to what? That doesn't fix the problem. The problem is Windows Mail
ignores any defaults you have set and always uses itself for mail in the
scenario described by the OP. One could argue that since you clicked the
"Reply" button within Windows Mail that it is natural for it to start the
e-mail in Windows Mail. But Windows Mail is the next generation of Outlook
Express, and Outlook Express in XP with Outlook installed would start
Outlook when the reply button in Outlook Express was clicked, if Outlook was
the default mail client.

They have changed the behavior in Windows Mail to ignore defaults in that
way. This is a change from previous versions of the product, and there is
no setting that I am aware of that changes the behavior.
