| | Removing Protected Registry Keys OK, I installed Virtual CD v8 in Vista before finding out it is not compatible with Vista. Upon uninstallation, I had virtual "ghost drives" still attacked to drive letters, including some of my physical drives. I tried to follow their instructions about deleting the associated registry keys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\SCSI, but kept receiving an error saying "Cannot delete [key name]. Error while deleting key." After reading through these forums, I finally figured out how to change permissions using the advanced tab. Success I thought! WRONG! Everytime I changed permissions to "allow" on one folder, it created a new nested folder which was protected!!!! I am still getting the "Cannot delete" error above! Any ideas???? Thanks! |

| | Re: Removing Protected Registry Keys Hi Mpotter-- I don't think you got permissions changed to get the reg deletion done. Try this: Rt. Click key>permissions>security tab> (in stead of hitting advanced button this time)>edit>add>type in users>OK>close. Open again and close. You should be able to delete that key and you haven't extended permissoions for any other key or subkey. | | Re: Removing Protected Registry Keys Hi Chad, Thanks for the help. I tried what you said, but the only place I see an edit option is in the advanced tab. Also, this time, some of the subkeys give me an "access denied" message when trying to change permissions. Any other ideas? | | Re: Removing Protected Registry Keys If you look at this screen shot you see another place as I said. If all else fails you can edit the registry outside of Windows. I have added the registry plug-in to a Bart PE image with some other tools. (http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/). Get the completed iso image here and burn to a cd. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=7P7HNAKA [72MB] Boot from cd Network support=no Click on Go button Select Programs Select Registry Editor Select location of Windows [normally C:\windows] Accept default Sam file Accept default Security file Accept default Software file Accept default System file Do you want a remote user profile hive y/n [normally no] The registry keys will be loaded and labelled as _Remote. E.g. HKLM\_Remote_Software or HKLM\_Remote_System etc. You will now be able to edit / delete with no restrictions. |

| | Re: Removing Protected Registry Keys Thanks bomb, I was finally able to delete the keys using Bart PE. Handy software! Only one little, extremely minor problem remains. Anything assigned to K: drive (the drive formerly assigned as virtual) no longer acquires the correct icon (ie hard drive, cd-rom drive, etc. icon). Instead, it just shows the windows default "I don't know what this is" icon (page with corner folded down and what appears to be a window with icons on it). Again, not a major problem . .. . I can live with it. I couldn't live with the annoying ghost drive I had before, but any ideas are still appreciated. Thanks again Chad & bomb!
