Unable to run Internet Explorer in Protected Mode

Receive the following error message when starting IE in protected mode:

Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 7.0.6000.16386, time stamp
0x4549b133, faulting module ophook32.dll, version 11.0.0.1, time stamp
0x3cfb38ec, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00003d70, process id
0x1714, application start time 0x01c74cd46c973f01.

Works fine when not running in protected mode. Any suggestions?

Re: Unable to run Internet Explorer in Protected Mode

ophook32.dll is a third-party module.

Perhaps you can disable this module (using Manage Add-ons in IE) and then open IE.

Re: Unable to run Internet Explorer in Protected Mode

Have you checked IE 7's add on manager to see if its possibly an installed
Add-on object that might be doing this? It could be a malicious one too
trying keep it turned off so it won't be detected and infiltrate your
system. Click Start type Internet Options > click > Programs > under "Manage
add-ons", select and disable any suspicious add ons.

Re: Unable to run Internet Explorer in Protected Mode

The problem was indeed with the ophook32.dll file, which is from Scansoft's
OmniPage OCR software. Interestingly enough, I could not find any sort of
reference to it anywhere in the add-on lists in the Manage Add-ons area.
Therefore I could not disable it. Wound up uninstalling the software as it
was an old version anyways and problem solved. Thanks for the help.

Re: Unable to run Internet Explorer in Protected Mode

I have a client who decided to install a Canon CanoScan 5000F on a
Windows Vista Machine. We had the exact same error and thanks to your
info about this IE error we were able to track it back to the
installation of the OmniPage SE software package. We will look for a
Vista Compatible Version. Thank you for posting your fix.

God Bless,
