Upgrading from XP to Vista Ultimate

I have been having one problem with upgrading to Vista. I'm getting a mesage
during installation that says "Windows could not prepare your computer to
boot into the next phase of installation. To install Windows, restart the
installation." I have tried restarting the installation twice and have had
no success. Is there a setting of some sort that needs to be changed?

if its the upgrade disc from xp, then try a clean installation of xp, if the
full installation disc, try formatting, or cant you do that using vista? i
just installed "over" xp, and i got a folder called windows.old as a result

If setup does become non-responsive, you can do a cold boot, start the
machine again and boot Vista setup into safe mode to see if Vista will
    finish setup.
Tip: (If setup becomes non-responsive or does not complete), do a Cold Boot
(reset the machine) > Start the computer, when the Windows Boot Manager is
displayed, select Windows Setup press F8 on your keyboard and setup should
    continue.

    Hi T.R.
It's not possible to *upgrade* from XP Home to Vista Ultimate. Here's what
MS says, "You can upgrade from your current edition of Microsoft Windows XP
or Windows 2000 to a corresponding or better edition of Windows Vista by
purchasing and installing an upgrade copy of Windows Vista." That could be
    your problem.

Ed, that is incorrect. XP Home and Pro can both be upgraded to Vista
Ultimate, with either an Upgrade edition or a Full edition.
