Cannot Activate Vista Ultimate

I recently purchased Vista Ultimate and installed it.
Every time I try to activate it (by clicking on the link in computer details
to activate it) Windows Explorer Crashes and restarts. No error message
explaining the problem appears, and I cannot activate Vista Ultimate.

What do I need to do to fix this.

Are there any errors in the event logs (eventvwr.msc)?

Re: Cannot Activate Vista Ultimate

The file causing the problem "mcodsax.dll" is part of McAfee. Try disabling
or uninstalling McAfee.

Re: Cannot Activate Vista Ultimate

Thank you that appears to have solved my problem. I had to uninstall McAfee,
disabling it wasn't sufficient.

Windows Vista Ultimate is now activated and I am re-installing McAfee.

I see that Fista's error reporting is just as useless as it is under XP. I
thought Fista was supposed to be an improvement over XP? Guess MickeyMouse
still can't get this stuff right. And they call it "user friendly".

Cheers.

Re: Cannot Activate Vista Ultimate

If you had tried Vista you would know that there is a radio button on the
page that generates this standard xml report to show the report in a
Friendly View. It's best to know what you are talking about when making a
criticism. Linux users can only hope for an event viewer and
troubleshooting/reporting system that is as rich, configurable, and useful
as the one in Vista.

Re: Cannot Activate Vista Ultimate

If McAfee caused this problem it is likely to cause more. It is not a
security solution I recommend.

Re: Cannot Activate Vista Ultimate

I understand that, but I've got a two year subscription already paid for.
When Microsoft provides a functional anti-virus suite as good as McAfee's I
will probably switch.

Anti-spyware like Windows Defender is good, and so is the Windows Firewall,
especially with the improvements in Vista, but Microsoft doesn't provide an
anti-virus solution so I have to use third pary solutions.

Re: Cannot Activate Vista Ultimate

I most emphatically don't recommend Microsoft antivirus products. Windows
Defender is worth what you paid for it. The Windows Firewall is very good.
For antivirus I recommend Nod32. McAfee's product is good at catching
viruses, not so good at removing them, and really not so good at cooperating
with Windows.
