| | Cursing jumping all over the place in Vista I just upgraded Windows XP Media Center edition to Windows Vista Home Premium. The upgrade went fine on my second attempt AFTER I uninstalled McAfee Security Center and McAfee Virus scanner. However, I noticed that my cursor has a tendency to jump all over the place. I went to the Synaptics website and downloaded the most recent driver that's supposed to work with Vista, but I'm still having the problem. Any idea how to solve this problem? Thanks. |

When your mouse cursor is jumping around... check your CPU usage in Task Manager. If it's HIGH than look at "Processes" in Task Manager and see what is using the excess CPU. Sometimes in XP on various machines I would see very high CPU numbers on the performance tab but nothing unusual on the Processes tab. So my suggestion may or may not help you. But re-booting usually helps. Then pay attention to what programs you've used prior to the mouse skipping around you display. |

| | RE: Cursing jumping all over the place in Vista OK I know this is stupidly obvious but is it a cordless mouse and if so are the batteries fresh? I found my touchpad to be extremely sensitive in Vista. I had to turn it off. While typing just brushing it with my palm would cause the cursor to jump to a different area of the screen. I never really used it much preferring to use a wireless mouse instead so turning it off wasn't an imposition. Hopefully Synaptics will come with a newer driver soon. -- Kerry Brown Microsoft MVP - Shell/User http://www.vistahelp.ca |

| Vista Ultimate X64 SP2 | Re: Cursing jumping all over the place in Vista I am having the same skipping, jumping bezerk touchpad issues. I noticed it after installing vista updates around the 9th of february. I also tried the synaptics driver- didnt fix problem. Reinstalled default microsoft driver. The bezerk touchpad is irregular (comes and goes), and after a few moments returns to normal sensitivity. I thought my touchpad was going bad. This problem doesn't seem to occur with usb optical mouse, and may be a result of a conflict with the ps/2 compatible mouse driver. gonna go into safe mode and see if it still occurs. I suspect it is a glitch. Any others having this issue? Last edited by rive0108; 02-20-2008 at 09:33 PM.. |

| | Re: Cursing jumping all over the place in Vista It's because part of your hand is touching the touchpad. Most laptops have a way of toggling off the touchpad. Usually the function [FN] key plus another key [usually some icon indicating a touchpad]. When you got to type, turn off the touchpad. This precludes the mouse pointer moving from inadverent touching of the touchpad by the meat of the thumb or some other part of the hand. | Vista Ultimate X64 SP2 | Re: Cursing jumping all over the place in Vista I only touch the touchpad with one finger. part of my hand is not brushing the pad, and my problem has nothing to do with typing. Thanks anyways Saucy, but the cursor goes bezerk with the pad not even being touched during its little jig. If it were something as simple as a brushing of the pad I think I would have resolved the issue by now. I suspect its a sensitivity issue and/or conflict- Motherboard out of sync with the mouse and starts misinterpreting all the data. i.e., It receives a "y b x" from the mouse and treats the y byte as the x-delta, the b byte as the y-delta, and the x byte as the button state. Result: A mouse that goes crazy Last edited by rive0108; 02-20-2008 at 11:45 PM.. |

There has been some Windows Update in the last couple of weeks that is causing this I expect. ss. |
