Yes,please tell what other problems might arise if this solution is
not the proper one.
Or tell what the file"INFCACHE.1" is intended there for??

Thanks.

The deletion of "INFCACHE.1" does really work...good find,
'flo...@dimmid.de '
But as pointed out by "Darrell Gorter[MSFT]",that it can cause other
probems....what these problems can be ??

Re: Driver search fails everytime - and have to set the search manually (each time) to System32.. help...

Has there been a fix for this yet? I have the same problem. I have to
tell it to manually install, point it to C:\Windows\System32, then it
installs drivers, but for something like bluetooth or a usb device, it
has to do it every time.

How do I delete this INFCACHE.1 file? I can't seem to do it, even from
an elevated command prompt.

You can probably delete the file while using safe mode - command prompt.

However, I believe deleting the file will do you no good. That file is
there for a reason and when you search for a driver again it will re-appear.

Is this file in any place besides the INF folder in your SystemRoot? If so
then check this regkey and remove everything but "%SystemRoot%\inf":

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\DevicePath

Then you can delete the file and it should not come back. If it does then
check the regkey again. If the regkey updates again then you have an
offending app/process that is causing this issue.

I got the file deleted by taking ownership of it and changing the
properties for full control, then I could delete it. This move
immediately fixed my problem with my USB Bluetooth dongle, now when I
try to hook to a bluetooth device, it just works where before it would
try and install the driver every time and not do it. So........I'm
good, perhaps only until I try to install some other driver!

My HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
\DevicePath only has "%SystemRoot%\inf" and I can find NO instances of
INFCACHE.1 anywhere. If one comes back when something needs a driver,
we'll deal with it at that time!! For now, I'm good.

A week or so ago I had a problem with CD and DVD RW type drives not
having a driver in Device Manager. They wouldn't install when the
system booted and just showed as CD-ROM in Explorer, in Device Manager
they showed no driver!! I had to manual install, pointing to C:\Windows
\System32 to get them to install. This is all related somehow, I
believe. But as I said, all is good FOR NOW!

Re: Driver search fails everytime - and have to set the search manually (each time) to System32.. help...

Well i recently installed vista again from scratch...and initially
since this problem doesnt persists,i checked the INFCACHE.1 file, and
its size was 1636 KB !

and when the problem arises ,its size is 1KB...

so in my logic...the problem comes when the driver details from that
file gets deleted by unknown means so that its size goes down to
1KB...

this problem is so basic...how did microsoft didnt encountered this
error while in beta???

I just checked the old beta NG and I can't find any mention of this issue.
It wasn't found because it wasn't a problem to anyone on the beta. At
least, nothing that was reported. Out of plain curiosity I've been keeping
a watchful eye on that file. The only time it changed was when I updated my
video card driver yesterday.

Re: Driver search fails everytime - and have to set the search manually (each time) to System32.. help...

I see basically the same thing. On another Vista computer without the
problem, INFCACHE.1 is 1.6x MB, on the computer WITH the problem, it
is 4k. I copied the file to a different location before deleting it,
so I know this for sure. Somehow this file gets corrupt.

I WON'T be attempting to copy the one from the good computer to the
one where the problem was, however!! If INFCACHE.1 gets created when
something tries to install a driver, we'll see what happens!
