I need a partition manager that is more advanced than the one bundled with
Vista (which is inadequate). Does anyojne know of one?

I believe PM8 only works on XP and Acronis doesn't officially state that
theirs supports Vista (and judging by the issues raised on their forums -
definitely doesn't).

I would suggest the GParted Live CD.

Unless you've actually tried GParted and know that Linux tools work with
Vista - and you might, I'm not dissing your skills but just mentioning
this - I would stay away from GParted for now and just stick with
something that is known to work with Vista. There is always a problem
with working with proprietary systems and Vista does some proprietary
partition structure things apparently. If the GParted maintainers
specifically say that it works with Vista and/or you've tried it, then
I've always like GParted on my Linux boxen.

I could be wrong, but it was my understanding that vista uses NTFS.
GParted does NTFS.

My understanding is that the "flavor" of NTFS used by Vista is slightly
different than the one used by XP. Also, one of the partition experts on
a mailing list I belong to was noting that Vista puts some extra
information on partitions. I wasn't paying a huge amount of attention to
that topic so I don't remember all the details and I'm *not* a
partitioning expert. Please don't misunderstand me - this is not a
"don't use GParted" post. All I'm saying is "be cautious". I would say
the same thing about any partitioner if it wasn't known to work 100%
with Vista. You might want to experiment with using GParted and report
back to us. Or not. ;-)
