Why no system tray icon for Defender?

A friend told me in the Vista beta there was an icon in the system tray to
control Windows Defender. I don't have one so where did it go? I want to be
able to temporarily disable defender and start running it again when I want
because I don't want it running in the background when I play computer
games. I looked in the options for Defender and I see nothing that allows
me to do this. WTF? No disable internet connection on the icon Microsoft
puts there, no disable Defender either. Seems to me Vista takes away a lot
of the control I had in XP and is trying to dumb it all down for the noob.

You have to option it to be on in tools/options.

Tou talking about the icon in control panel? I want a quick access icon in
my system tray to disable/enable when I run games. Just as I want a quick
access enable/disable for my internet connection too. When I play resource
hungry offline games I want to not be connected to the internet and I don't
want things like Defender, antivirus etc. running in the background. I
don't want to have to go all the way to control panel to do it every time.
Why was the Defender icon removed if it was in the beta?

Re: Why no system tray icon for Defender?

Click Windows Orb, and type defender. In the defender interface go to
tools, user tools go to options, in options scroll down to "Choose when the
Windows Defender icon appears in the notication" select always. This is
the same as the XP verison.
Defender does not check to see what programs connect to the internet. It
only checks to see what programs are spyware, etc. To close Defender right
click on the icon and click close. To reopen defender Click Windows Orb,
and type defender

Hope that helps

Re: Why no system tray icon for Defender?

There wasn't one in my XP either. I hd to run it frpm Start if I needed.

I'm on OneCare in Vista where's it's off, because it's part of Vista, in
another form, I guess

Ooops, that was where I was all along, which can be accessed via control
panel too, but I didn't notice there was a scroll bar so never saw the
other options. Thanks again.

Re: Why no system tray icon for Defender?

I have done all of that and it still will not appear in the tray.

If I go to Control panel, Security, Windows Defender the icon pops right up
in the tray. I have chosen "Choose when WD appears in the tray" I selected
"Always"

Can anyone help me?
