| | Why Vista is great Wow, do you people love to complain about great products. Go ahead, stop your crying if you don't like Vista. Nobody is forcing you to buy it. Go use a "wonderful" Mac, or use Linux and see where you get. I'm sick of ignorant people bashing a great product. WHY? Because you've 1) probably never used it, and have heard some kid who probably tried to pirate a copy complain about something 2) think that YOU should obtain main years of hard work in the form of software - FREE (go use Linux, you'll see the quality of programming and level of hardware and software support for that OS... it has NO place on a Home Desktop system -- web server? Sure) 3) You just like looking for things to complain about and are afraid of change. Get over yourselves! Vista by FAR is the best OS to date, bar none. There are no hugely glaring issues, and hopefully IT WILL force people with dated hardwar eto upgrade... its good for the industry and consumer as a whole incase some of you cannot see the larger picture here instead of your "right here, right now" crying nonsense. Get with the program. Either enjoy the best OS created to date, or get lost and use whatever else you want. Go cry somewhere else... for the rest of the people also who might actually ENJOY Vista, don't ruin it for them with your BS and 'cause Microsoft to lose out on a sale because you're talking from your nether regions. Get real... Vista is awesome. |

Vista is awesome. > Define "great" and "best OS ever". I've been there with Vista and found absolutely nothing in it that was superior to Windows 2000. Many of the things people are raving (positively) about are nothing new. Voice Recognition? Integral to OS/2 Warp 3. The supposed new features of the Windows browser remind me a lot of what I have available now through Adobe bridge. Many of the other supposed "Wow!" features are nothing new to user of other operating systems. They are just new to Windows. All you're getting is prettier pictures to look at on the screen, nothing new really behind the scenes. I ended up reformatting and installing XP rather than ride the tide. I'm happier for it. Many of the things people are raving (negatively) about are far more significant. Hardware that needs to be replaced simply because there are no Vista drivers and the hardware vendors have no intention of writing the drivers because . . . you guessed it . . . they'd rather sell you a new piece of hardware rather than furnish an upgraded driver. Look through the posts on the Vista news groups for the horror stories people are having with video cards, audio cards, scanners and other related peripherals. And this is not even including the problems people are having listening to music they own or watching movies they own because of DRM glitches. Unless you are in the business of selling new hardware and software, Vista is a giant step backwards for too many people. But you know what? Vista will succeed. It's just too bad that it will succeed for all the wrong reasons. It will succeed because companies will stop producing hardware that will run on previous editions of Windows. When your printer or scanner needs replacing, you will be out of luck. It will succeed because application developers will write new programs that require Vista and not be compatible with previous versions of Windows. Vista will succeed because when you buy your next computer you will not have a choice of what operating system to run. Vista will not succeed because of any superiority. |

| | Re: Why Vista is great Well said, however... would you not agree that creating an entirely "new" platform is not a good thing? For those who still want to 'ride the wave' with XP and their existing hardware can do so; when ready the new hardware you'll buy will all be compatible. However, I've not run into a single hardware compatability issue with any of the 3 systems I've installed Vista on. Even a scanner (an old HP 3300c) which is what, from '99 I think? I'm pretty sure that oddly enough, to negate your argument here... the driver database in Vista is much larger than in XP. Though if people are having hardware issues, you can't argue that point that they are indeed having issues. I must say though, that your view of the OS simply looking prettier could be further from the truth... have you used the indexing, the breadcrumb folder navigation system, the improved audio stack, the overall snappy-ness of the interface and the glaring lack of UI draw errors, and odd wait times to do things such as right clicking on the desktop to pull up the alt. menu? The navigational system, the folder views... everything has gotten a great facelift. For one, I also like that I am alerted whenever software needs admin rights to install... and who the heck is complaining about too many 'clicks'?? Please lol I laugh at that one... oh no, an extra click or two when you want to install a piece of software... wooooo! =) How lazy are we, that we'd rather not deal with extra security measures? I could go on for hours all the little changes you overlook when you've not actually sat and used Vista to its fullest. Besides, it looks darn pretty anyhow you're right =) Even something as silly as the 'gadget' (I mean widget? lol) system is a very overlooked, simple yet very useful system. Anyways, I could go on... but for those with good-name hardware... I see no issue, nor reason to complain. And of course, Vista is brand new. Nothing in the software world is 100% perfect typically out-of box, especially when it comes to an OS. That being said... Vista is pretty darn near excellence in every manner especially being right out of the box. Most people in business especially, thing "better wait until the SP1" ... don't know how many times I've heard that. Vista? For me and many others with decent systems, it just works. And if it forces you to upgrade then good... but again nobody is forcing you! | | Re: Why Vista is great Well here it is a question from a "non-ignorant" user: I have a SBS 2003 R2 server; in the D HD (Data) I have a folder with several sub-folders and hundreds of files, The entire folder is set to be available offline as they are all the sub-folders and files. The problem is that some of these files are not available when I go offline. What is weird is that in Windows Explorer all the files, including the ones that are not available, are marked with the green round logo with the two yellow arrows indicating that they supposedly are available. To make things more complicated and much worse is that if I right click on a file/ click properties/ General tab the file show the above mentioned logo; clicking the "Offline folders" tab the "Always available offline" option is checked so people would assume that everything is fine but under "Details" tab the file is listed as "Offline Availability: Not available" and this is true, the file is not available! Note that booting with XP the same file, in the same location, same Domain etc. is available offline therefore is something specifically related to Vista. Another thing I noted is that all the files "really" available under "Details" have, in the "Attribute" line a "A", the one not available do not have it. Note that I do not have this issue when booting XP Pro. Any idea? Thanks in advance Stefano C. | | Re: Why Vista is great >All you're getting is prettier pictures to look at on the screen, nothing >new really behind the scenes. I have to say that is a pretty ignorant statement. Seems there you are referring to Aero, which is not transparency. Aero has nothing to do with making things pretty. Aero allows Windows to use your graphics card to handle the user interface rather than your processor. If you turn off Aero, you may notice that your computer will actually be noticeably slower. However, by turning off Aero, I don't mean turning off transparent borders. Those are two completely different things. If you read the documentation, you will see that there are hundreds of new features, both big and small. It takes a while to notice and appreciate all those features. Read the product guide and the other documentation that Microsoft provides, I won't list all the usefull consumer features here. One of the major improvements of Windows Vista over Windows XP is the improved security. The combination these new and improved features (Windows Firewall, Internet Explorer's Protected Mode, anti-phishing filter, User Account Control with Secure Desktop, Windows Defender, address space layout randomization, Windows Update, Bitlocker Drive Encryption, Patchgaurd) are a significant deterrent to spyware and viri and a significant addition to Windows. -- /* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Robert Firth * * Windows Vista x86 RTM * * http://www.WinVistaInfo.org * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * */ "emanon" <emanon@erehwon.com> wrote in message news:OnqEnkdVHHA.3500@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... > > "Cody" <Cody@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > news:05B3C561-B541-45AC-94C1-58798486E78E@microsoft.com... >> Wow, do you people love to complain about great products. All you see in the ads is the useless windowing feature from the Windows Key + Tab. I would not buy it for that. Perhaps if they mention a new Aero architechture that allows processing currently being done on an overworked CPU to be offloaded to the GPU, more tech people would be interested. A lot of the other built in "features" are available in XP through third party programs, and MS finally got around to integrating them in Vista - nothing new, like their big "wow" with IE7 that is now has tabs that have been available in Firefox. Software should need admin rights to install. Perhaps users would be more secure if MS forced them to set up multiple accounts, where you need to select a user when you initially start Windows, with Admin as one of those users, and you have to enter a password at least for Admin. Only the Admin user should have full admin rights. Ideally only the Admin user should be able to install anything, and if you install as anyone else you should have to use "run as". Alerts on install are not annoying, but if as someone said here you have to click to allow every time you run a program, that is annoying. The OS should prompt you when a program wants to run, but it needs to distinguish programs that run themselves and ones the user started. > Anyways, I could go on... but for those with good-name hardware... They don't want to install Vista unless it works with all their hardware printers, scanners, copiers, etc. They don't want to try Vista while they still have PCs with PII 600 processors, 128 MB RAM, and maybe 32 MB video RAM... |

| | Re: Why Vista is great All this is great but the issue is still "Why can't microsoft write a new OS that doesn't make it easier (or even possible) for people to "upgrade" their computers without having to upgrade all their software and hardware at the same time?" It's great for all you young folks with lots of money and computer needs, but for those of us who just want to get better security and move ahead it's really annoying that I can't run simple programs I've written in VB and used for years and printers and scanners that have years of life left on them simply because Microsoft wants to "protect" me from the outside world. Surely I should be allowed to decide if I want protection and simply disconnect form the internet (outside world) if I want to use low security programs. It can't be that difficult for the geniuses in Microsoft to accomplish this and it just makes people like me more cynical thinking that the real reason for this "upgrade" is to separate us from more of our money. Thank goodness Bill Gates has a very nice charitable foudation or I would be really p......... off.
