disk usage

I just installed Vista Ent Edition x64. I did a fresh install, blowing away
my partition and starting from scratch. After installing only Vista, Office
2007 Ent and Avant A/V, I was amazed (dismayed) to see that my Windows
directory is over 10GB in size. Its 10.3 GB and has over 52,000 files.
This seems like major overkill. Is it all really needed?

Thanks, Andre

Yep! It's a big operating system.

Re: disk usage

it's 64bit, so that means the code is twice as big...DUH !

Actually, it is kinda funny, because I have both 32 and 64bit installed and
the 32 ultimate's Windows directory is only 5.85GB with 38,072 files and my
64bit Home Prem install is 10.8GB with 52,732 files.

Maybe the code really is twice as big

Re: disk usage

That's funny. A buddy of mine said the same thing. And so far, I must say
that I'm not wowed with the performance of 64 bit. It doesn't "feel" any
faster than 32. But I just installed it yesterday, so I haven't really
played too much yet.

It's a biggy, even biggier in 64-bits.

Re: disk usage

I'm not sure there is any WOW to be had in the 64bit version. If you do a
google search there seems to be some debate on whether pure 64bit apps and
OSes are slower than 32bit apps and OSes. Most of the studies are on the MAC
with the G5 vs the new Intels.

I guess the real 64bit advantage doesn't come in until you need more than
4GB of ram. There are some areas that "seem" to behave better in the 64bit
OS, than the 32 bit, But at least from my gaming benchmarks, there is no
difference in the numbers.
