Vista - Windows picture gallery problem

I use the GIMP for picture editing but I noticed that when I
downloaded some photos from a digital camera and put them into the
picture gallery, and then used the built in Picture Gallery methods
for editing the photos, and then tried to open them in the GIMP, the
jpeg plugin for the GIMP just kept crashing - it would open pictures
not manipulated by the Picture Gallery without any problems.

Is this a 'bug' with the picture gallery and / or is there a fix for
the GIMP?
