Vista Defrag shuts down

When I start the defragmenter it analysis the drive and says it should be
dfragmented. It runs for about 10 mins then stops and re analysis the drive
again and says it should be defragmented. Anyone have a solution or an idea
on how to stop this from happening?

Re: Vista Defrag shuts down

Yes,

Don't use the hard drive when it is doing a defrag. Don't modify or change
anything, basically, go rent a couple of movies and let the machine do its
thing. Modifying files on the computer, even if you didn’t think you
modified anything, even opening a file, can mess up defrag. However, if you
use Windows Live OneCare, this will not happen.

RE: Vista Defrag shuts down

To me Disk Defragmenter in Vista is a joke, but it's not funny. I recommend
using PerfectDisk, not only has more options and flexibilities, it does what
it says does at much quicker speed.

Sure if you like watching colored blocks shake and move, by all means waste
your money on a 3rd party defragmener.

Re: Vista Defrag shuts down

Hi,
I don´t yet have Vista (is coming).
Try to avoid having other programma´s running , for sure not Zone Alarm or
any virusscanner, internet connection.
What you report is a known fact by ME-users.
Sometimes even the screensaver has to be disabled.

I fully agree with the comments of Rock and others, try to avoid as less as
possible third programm´s.

As far as i am informed by now, i am intended only to use a virusscanner,
Firewall & Defender should be ok.

Further comments welcome.

Regards
Huib

If I tell Vista to defrag just one HDD does it automatically start
defragging all the HDD's on my PC? I don't want it defragging my XP HDD
too, just the Vista one but it seems there is no such option and it defrags
all of the HDD's and partitons.

You can specify which hard drive to defrag by using the command line tool.
From an elevated command prompt do defrag /? to see the options.

OK, thx. But why no GUI to do that anymore?

There has been much discussion on this. If you want the full version do
some searching in the Vista newsgroups for defrag. The GUI was removed
basically because it was inaccurate. It was set up to run in the background
at a time when the computer is not normally used, so it basically handles it
without user intervention.

If you have the strong need to see colored blocks shake and move get one of
the 3rd party defragmenters such as Raxco Perfect Disk or Diskeeper. I
think it's a waste of money though. For the most part on today's hardware
fragmentation is not a significant impediment to performance. The built in
tool does just fine.

I've got PerfectDisk and I don't watch colored blocks shake and move.
It runs in the background.
