Windows Vista Slideshow Not Working

I just bought my new laptop came pre-installed with Vista Premium Home.
Tried using the slideshow feature from windows explorer, photo gallery, and
screen saver and I get nothing. I browse to a folder containing pics I want
to view and click the slideshow button, the screen fades out to black, it
shows a loader image that says "loading" goes black again and just stays
black. I checked my computer stats and it has a rating of 3.0, which I
understand is adequate for using this feature, so I don't know what the
problem is. Browsed numerous other discussions and can't find answers.
Computer has dual core, 1.0gb ram, and 512mb video.

Re: Windows Vista Slideshow Not Working

hop many pictures are in the folder.
if quite a few it takes a bit to set them up.
move a couple to a different folder and try from that folder with less pictures.
that's what I found anyway.

The number of pictures influences the slide show startup time??

Now that's pathetic.

Don't tell me they actually pre-load all images into memory..

At home I have loads of pictures and no slow down at all.
(Vista installed by me)

At work (much higher spec, better graphics card -
preinstalled vista) with the pictures that come with vista
it's slow and I get black screens too.

So I doubt it's the number of pictures.

Re: Windows Vista Slideshow Not Working

probably because they are checking and verifying each pictures before allowing it to be seen.
as I said it made a difference on mine.
after I found that with a few pictures it worked, I was patient and waited for it to catalogue over 200 and it worked.
only had to do it one time.

If explorer is set to icon view, they create thumbnails when you first
visit a folder. Maybe that's causing too much load on some systems?

OTOH, I couldn't repeat it, not even in a folder with 300+ pictures on
an USB disk (picked because it's slower than my main harddisk).

Most likely but that's kind of a bad away to go about it. They shouldn't be
creating thumbnails for every image in the folder. Only for the ones that
can actually be seen. At that point in time, you could have a million
pictures in there and it wouldn't make a difference.

RE: Windows Vista Slideshow Not Working

The other day it stopped working for me too. But only pressing 'Slideshow'
button in the explorer directory view doesn't work now (nothing happens, just
the busy pointer for a pair of seconds and WPG.exe isn't even started), using
the WPG program alone everything works fine though. I have Win Vista HB, and
'till yesterday the slideshow did work fine.
How can I reset the button to work properly? Someone knows how to fix the
Registry (if needed)?

Re: Windows Vista Slideshow Not Working

David,
Answered a similar post in music_pictures_video forum, and it turned out to be the good old shell extension problem.
