external harddisk changes format in vista??? HEEEEEELP

very strange....

I have a newer external harddisk packard bell usb 2.0 400 gb
connected to my pc using home premium.
It worked initially but when I turned my pc on this morning
I canīt get no access to it (but it shows up in explorer as local disk)
It says that I need to format the disk in order to use it...which I find
strange since I have over 350 gb of data on it.
It might be a harddisk error of some sort or maybe itīs vista making
trouble?

Is there anyway to save the data without making it format??

When I look under diskhandling under administration it says format "RAW"
and it should of course be ntfs.

regards

mike

Do you have access to another non-vista computer?

Try connecting it to that.

Iīm really puzzled......

The good news is you didn't lose your data.

And I guess the bad news is that he's wasted his money on Vista. Oh well, so
turns the world. What a shame.

Cheers.

Out of curiousity have you tried to assign a drive letter to it? It may
allow the system to recognize it.
