Vista is protecting me from myself?

Every time I change a setting in Vista, I get a popup window asking if I
want
to do this. At first I appreciated the added security but it is getting
annoying now. Is there a way to shut this off?

Any recommendations for security software? Machine came with McAfee security
suite. I have 60 days to figure out if I like it or not. So far, I still
prefer Norton Internet Security that I used on the older machine.

Thanks - Oppie

Go to users in control panel and turn off UAC.
Do not go with MacAfee or Norton, both bloatware that will kill your
performance, there are many good free options out there, such as AVG. I'm
using a free 1 year subscrib from CA.

As David said, the UAC prompts can be turned off in the Control Panel. I'd
recommend against doing this for security reasons however.

For anti-virus I'd recommend AVG Free
(http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti.../lng/us/tpl/v5) and also
NOD32 (http://www.eset.com/) if you don't mind spending some money. But it
is the best AV I've come across, far better than whatever Symantec or McAfee
release, and it stays out of your way too.

For a firewall the Windows Firewall will do the job.

Disable UAC. However, you should be aware that Symantec have just
admitted that UAC helps to make Vista immune to any current malware out
there.

NOD32.

Re: Vista is protecting me from myself?

UAC being User Access Control? I don't remember seeing that in the control
panel (I'm on xp pro now at the office).

I will look at AVG. Thanks. Between being memory starved and bloatware, this
new machine is slow.

Re: Vista is protecting me from myself?

You are seeing UAC. Here is a link that explains what it is and how it
works.

http://www.jimmah.com/vista/security/uac.aspx

So far all of the security suites seem to cause more problems than they
solve in Vista. I recommend a stand alone antivirus combined with the
windows firewall and a router. I use Nod32

Re: Vista is protecting me from myself?

If you have the 64-bit Vista you will have to buy AVG Pro. It doesn't cost
much and worth it (I think). I've been running it for a few days on my new
Vista Ultimate system with no issues. I've also been running it for several
years on my other systems (free version) with no issues.

People need to stop saying UAC provides "security". It doesn't really.
Source: You may be surprised: Microsoft themselves.

Microsoft has admitted that yes, UAC is liable to social engineering.

http://www.symantec.com/enterprise/s...c_prompts.html

The design shold have been more along the lines what they do with
their browser where YOU the actual owner of the computer decide on the
level of secuity you want to have. This either nothing (turned off) or
endless nag screens when on and often difficulity changing permissions
has got to be the biggest marketing blunder Microsoft ever dumped on
their users.

UAC is simply far too intrusive and not ready for prime time. The beta
testers screamed bloody murder about it during beta testing and
Microsoft cut it way back in how intrusive it was, not nearly enough
obviously. Of course the point is if you cut it back too much then it
becomes worthless. Either way it far from bullet proof as I've been
saying.

Re: Vista is protecting me from myself?

Ditto on the NOD32 recommendations. It's the best AV available - bar none.
