task scheduler started but not????

I have Vista on an hp laptop
I have been in contact with HP about an annoying pop up, they say to
disable it in task scheduler, but when i go to start task scheduler it says
to please verify it is running and to click OK, when the window comes up it
says failed to read data. I have gone in to services and it says its
started. I even tried to right click on the task scheduler in servicees and
all the options to stop it are greyed out, any help?

Thanks
Dave

Re: task scheduler started but not????

might do a thorough check of your computer for virus/trojan/malware.
they are known to do strange things.

Re: task scheduler started but not????

Did you try to disable UAC (User Account Control) and Windows Defender etc?
It helped me a lot, when I tried to troubleshoot a few things -

I also uninstalled the program One Care, since all this security was making
me pull out my hair in frustration.
I had so many problems installing stuff with all these settings...

Re: task scheduler started but not????

This is probably a symptom of a problem with the Event Viewer service
(Windows Event Log) not starting or functioning correctly--you can't have
Task Scheduler without Event Log (even though it may appear that the Task
Scheduler Service is running).
Open Event Viewer in Administrative Tools---do you get an error? If so,
check Services and try to start (restart) the Event Log Service. If it won't
stay running, that's the root of your problem, which quite a number of
others have experienced. I do not have a solution. Yet.
