Adding expanding folders to Windows Vista Start Menu

In Windows XP, I was able to add links and folders with links to the "Open"
or "Open all Users" folders. This way, my links and folders would show up in
the Start Menu after clicking on the start button. And: The folders wold
expand upon clicking. I used this feature to easily access a larger number of
links to programs I was using al the time.

In Vista, this changed. I can still add my own links to the Start menu. But
when I add a folder link to the Start menu, the folder does no longer expand
when clicking on it in the Start menu. Rather, the folder opens in a new
window.

Is there a way to have folder links expand in the Start menu, as it did in
XP?

Re: Adding expanding folders to Windows Vista Start Menu

Hi Mikael--

Yes; but not from a company called Microsoft. Their shell team was too
shortsighted to provide it--one of a panoply of functionality
disappointments in Vista aside from the drove of bugs that they ignored and
shipped to their customers.

Try:

Vista Start Menu
http://www.vistastartmenu.com

Tidy Start Menu -
http://www.tidystartmenu.com/

Good luck,

CH

Re: Adding expanding folders to Windows Vista Start Menu

It seems folders & shortcuts to folders must be added at or below:

"C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs"

If they are adding directly under:

"C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu"

they will not work.

Also, if you're dragging a .lnk shortcut to the folder or creating a
shortcut via 'Right-Click->New->Shortcut', the resulting shortcut will open
an Explorer window. But, if you create the shortcut by right-clicking and
dragging the target folder to "...\Start Menu\Programs", and selecting
'Create Shortcut' upon releasing the mouse button, you create a different
type of shortcut -- one that will cascade as you expect. In a details view
of the folder, this type of shortcut will show a Type of 'File' rather than
'Shortcut'
