VISTA - files open in explorer instead of office program

SYMPTOMS
When you click an HTML link to a Microsoft Office file (such as a Microsoft
Word or Excel document), Internet Explorer may open the file in Internet
Explorer, instead of opening the file in the appropriate Office program.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/162059

I have the same problem I did with XP etc... but with Vista, the kb article
doesn't apply...

So how can open the documents in the program instead of the browser?

Hi Pscobee,

Which version of Office are you using?

Re: VISTA - files open in explorer instead of office program

I am using Vista and Office pro 2007...

The microsoft documents work now, but if their is a link to a file on a
website processmap.igx for example, the file opens via explorer...

I want to set it so *.igx opens in igrafx, *.pdf opens in adobe reader, etc.
etc.

You can change the settings for the files extensions in winxp, but that
feature is not there in VISTA?

I use MOSS2007 to store my files and VISTA doesn't allow me to open them in
a program. I am forced to copy to my hard drive and then open, modify, then
copy back to sharepoint. This is of course negates the benefits of file
locking , version control and all the other reasons I am using MOSS2007 in
the first place.

Thanks for your help, Peter

Re: VISTA - files open in explorer instead of office program

Hi,

I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate/Office 2007 installed, and don't see the problem here. Links from a html page to a .doc file opens the document in Microsoft Word correctly. I'll try to simulate the problem in my system.

>> *.pdf opens in adobe reader

Which application do you use to view .PDF files. If you're using Adobe Acrobat Reader, there is a setting (Preferences dialog) which governs how .PDF files are opened from the web.

Re: VISTA - files open in explorer instead of office program

Yes it works for offce applications only.

WINXP can open all documents in the correct application, but vista cannot.

In Winxp the ability to open in an application or in the explorer browser
can selectively be changed, but vista does not have that capability.

Is here another way to change the registry or ???

I believe "Control Panel > Default Programs > Associate a file type or
protocol with a specific program" is what you are looking for. (That's
where it is with Control Panel in Classic View by the way.) Yes - it is
in a completely different place than it was on previous versions of Windows!

Also it only allows you to set the default program used to open the file
type, not any of the other options from right-clicking the file. Someone
posted a link on one of these forums to a free 3rd-party utility which
would provide a graphical interface for doing the latter, but I can't
remember off-hand where it is.

Hope that helps.
Mark.

Re: VISTA - files open in explorer instead of office program

Thanks Mark,

I will try to find the utlity.....

I found the defult program and it's t correctly. but when I open *.igx
files from a hosted sharepoint MOSSS2007 the files open in explorer, not the
default program. I even checked the settings in MOSS2007 and it's set to not
open in explorer, but it does.... One of my many issues with VISTA. I am
inches away from a reformat and going back to winxp....
