Vista - Computer Won't Resume From Sleep with Power Button

First let me say that my computer had been working fine with the ability to
Sleep and then resume from Sleep by pressing the Power button.

Now to the current time. A day or so ago, I came back from Sleep and found
my mouse had locked up. I could do nothing but hit the computer's reset
switch. After that, I could not boot up at all. To make a long story short,
the culprit seems to be a bad stick of ram added recently. I pulled the ram
and things seem to be back to normal - almost.

Now when I put the computer into Sleep mode, the Power button just turns on
the machine and then nothing. I need to then hit the computer's Reset button
to resume and then it seems to take longer than it used to. When it comes
up, I am at the same point as when I went to sleep, however. Obviously the
hiberfil.sys file is being created and used correctly.

My question is this: does anyone out there know why I would need to do a
Power On and Reset now when Power On used to do the trick?

Might be helpful if you described what you see when you say starts up the
machine and then nothing. Do you go thru POST? Have you tried F8 to see if
you get an options menu? Sleep mode is generally a hybrid mode, where
initially it goes into a low power state and retains memory with a small
current, later saving to the hiberfil and shutting down. Have you somehow
changed the power settings in the BIOS? What options are available on your
machine and what have you set? S1,S2,S3? Maybe some information would help
someone give you some assistance.

I was trying to avoid being overly verbose. Maybe I drifted the other way.

My machine, when it worked properly in Sleep mode, had the power settings in
the BIOS as "S1 & S3" (I do not have an S2 option available). It remains
that way now as well. In the past, I could simply press the Power button and
resume with these settings. (I have also tried S3 by itself.)

When I said "the machine turns on and then nothing", I meant just that: I
heard a little drive activity, the activity stopped and the screen remained
black. When I had waited for a number of minutes, I tried the Reset button
and the machine went through the normal POST and I saw a screen indicating
that the OS was resuming.

I have tried turning Hibernate off (powercfg -h off) and then back on
(powercfg -h on) to maybe reset things. This had no effect.

I have not tried F8 but may look at that later today (I am in the midst of a
OneCare tuneup that runs forever and do not want to restart it.)

Any ideas?.

Sounds like you have some kind of hang coming back from 'suspend' When you
do a reset you are coming back from hibernate. Have you tried shutting down
directly to hibernate off the start menu and seeing if you have the same
problem, or if not, it would confirm the problem is to awaken from suspend.
Have you looked in the Event logs to see if you have any messages related to
wakening. Event Viewer/applications and
services/Microsoft/windows/Diagnostics-performance

I just want to make sure I have terms down here:

My power options are set to put the program to sleep after an hour. "Allow
hybrid sleep" is set to "yes". "Hybernate after" is set to "never". I am
going to Start and picking the option "Sleep" which, I believe with the
settings above, goes to a low power state + writes to disk.

I am still not coming back from this with the Power button.

I looked in the Event Viewer and see the following things:
1 Error: Event ID 300 It indicates "Windows has resumed from standby"
3 Warnings: Event ID 301 "This application caused a delay during standby"
(Times Reader, Outlook, UPS)
2 Warnings: Event ID 303 "This service caused a delay during hybrid sleep"
(ActiveSync, Function Discovery Resource Publication Service?)
2 Warnings: Event ID 302 "This driver caused a delay during standby while
servicing a device" (Windows MobileRemote Adapter, USB Root Hub)

I am not sure if any of this means anything as far as the problem I am
encountering. All seem to indicate delays - not failures.

As far as "Hibernate", I do not have that option anywhere.

Any thoughts?

If you go to start, right arrow at the right side of the display, after the
lock, you don't have the hibernate option on the dropdown?
My current computer only has S1 so I can only hibernate. Sleep just turns
off the monitor.
As far a your events, I see the same as you except the Error.
Have you gone back to allowing S1 and S3 in the BIOS
Standby should put you in the low power state and it would appear turning
off the machine via reset restarts from the hiberfil. If you don't want
hibernation, have you considererd deleting the hiberfil. If you do, what
happens then when you reset? The easiest way to delete the hiberfil seems
to be via disk cleanup. Good luck.

Thanks for sticking with me.

I have gotten rid of Hibernate by running "powercfg -h off". This results in
deleting hiberfil.sys.You are absolutely right about Reset. After I deleted
that file, Reset simply did what it does: it restarted my machine. The Power
button after Sleep still hangs.

I am lost on this. I am actually on a desktop but liked the idea of coming
up quicker via using Sleep. At this point, I likely will just forget it.
Something probably got (slightly) messed up when I had the boot problem due
to the bad memory.

Are you using a Nvidia gfx card by any chance? Update to their beta driver
101.41 from their nzone.

i hibernated and then removed the HD, but when i put it back in it just shows the BIOS screen load up and after, there's a rectangle white bar flashing up on the top-left corner. i dont get a F8 menu, or a bluescreen, neither do i get a boot up logo. can some one help?
