May seem like an obvious question, but did you install Word and Excel on your Vista machine?
Vista is an Operating System and does not include Word or Excel.

Re: word and excel documents in Vista?

Can you open Word or Excel and open the documents? If so, you might check to
see if you can right click and select "Open With..." and select the
appropriate program and check "Always use this program".

Are you trying to open then via their file extension association (i.e. by
double-clicking them) or within Word / Excel by File, Open on the menu...?

Word and Excel are separate programs although they are part of MS
Office. They have never been available for download for free. You can
purchase Word and Excel separately from Office.

If you don't wish to purchase the programs, you can download and install
OpenOffice from www.openoffice.org which can read and save in earlier
Office formats.

If all you need to do is look at the files then the viewers will be enough.
Word and Excel are not free (you have to pay for them) and they're not
really downloadable--unless you have huge bandwidth and a lot of time.
