so here's how it goes:
I shut down my computer normally last night and went to bed. I wake
up, turn on my comp, and wait for vista to load. Vista loads, but most
of my desktop items are gone, the only things there are Computer,
Recyclce Bin, and Network. All of my settings have been set back to
default. My User Icon is a flower, my AIM settings are reset, and all
my sidebar gadgets are not there.
I go to C:\Users\Jay\Desktop and all my stuff is there, so I drag it
on to the desktop. This in theory should do nothing, since I am
dragging from desktop to desktop, but it actually moves everything
from C:\Users\Jay\Desktop to "the desktop".
I restart my computer and it loads into vista. For a brief second, I
see everything on my desktop like its supposed to be, but then, POOF,
all gone. It looks like all my settings have been restored, but
everything on my desktop is gone. I tried searching for things that
were supposed to be there, and it finds it, but when I try to open
them, it says they are not there. I have tried restoring the system to
4 different points in time, no luck. I have tried chkdsk, no luck. I
have tried un-delete programs, no luck. I know the data is there,
because my free disk space on C: has not changed.
I think If I had just restarted my computer when I saw something weird
happening, It would have been fine.
I'm a seasoned windows user, but this is the first time I've seen
something SO stupid from microsoft.
WHERE ARE MY FILES?!
