Vista Bug with Favorites Folder

I put my Favorites folder on a different partition than the one I have
installed Vista on. I did this by clicking on properties and changing its
location so that the system Favorites folder moved to the new partition.
However, IE7 was no longer able to create Favorites.

Sounds more like an IE7 bug to me.

Re: Vista Bug with Favorites Folder

I redirected my Favorites folder and am still able to create new favorites.

To verify that Vista knows what folder you want for Favorites, type
"shell:favorites" in the Start Search box -- this should open an Explorer
window to your Favorites folder.

Assuming the folder opened OK:

1) Right-click the Favorites folder in the left-hand pane & select
'Properties'.

2) In the 'Properties' dialog, select the 'Security' tab.

3) Click the 'Advanced' tab.

4) In the 'Advanced Security...' dialog, click the 'Owner' tab & verify that
you are the current owner. If not, use the 'Edit' button to take ownership.

5) Click the 'Effective Permissions' tab. Click the 'Select...' button &
type your username then click 'OK'. 'Full Control' should be checked. If
not, click the 'Permissions' tab, then the 'Edit' button, then the 'Add'
button. Type your username, 'OK', check the 'Allow' box for Full Control &
OK your way out.

Try this:
Open an admin command prompt
(right-click Command Prompt and click Run As Administrator)
Browse to the folder that contains your favorites folder
Type: icacls favorites /setintegritylevel (OI)(CI)low

Re: Vista Bug with Favorites Folder

I have just gone through a right battle moving my iTunes music to a different partion on my hard drive. I did not htink I had touched my favorites folder but when I later went into IE all my favorites were gone - the folder is empty. Any ideas where they went and how to get them back?

Re: Vista Bug with Favorites Folder

Thanks for the laugh! Its not been an evening of many of them.

I guess what I was really asking was is there any way that any of the iTunes libraries files is linked to the favorites file?

Other than that, i'll happily wait for your crystal ball

No connection.

Download Agent Ransack (a very simple and effective search tool).

Search for "favorites" without the quotes. You will find many such
folders.

Look for a Favorites folder listed under C:\Users\your_id\ that looks
like the normal Favorites folder (in blue or whatever that color is).

Re: Vista Bug with Favorites Folder

Thanks for your help and patience Jim. Downloaded the file search software - its cool - thanks for the tip.

I found only the one favorites folder - in the users area as expected, and it is completely empty. Its not a big deal, I can recreate it but I just wanted to understand what I did to trash its contents. (But they are not in the trash.) I know I am not an IT ace, but I can't believe I accidentally emptied the contents without noticing. Ergo, it must have been something else I did and I'll probably do it again. I guess when i do that, I'll figure it out!

Thanks anyway.
