missing links

Hi,
I installed Vista replacing and older XP image.
There were no warnings nor errors during the install process.
I have Windows Update automatically retrieving patches for Vista.

When I right-click on the Cdrive, select Properties/Tools then select
Defragment Drive, I get a message that the path does not exist!
So the help file says to go to Control Panel select "add/remove programs"
icon. No such icon is in Control Panel, vista nor classic view.

There is a "programs" icon that describes how to use 3rd party install
applications on the CD - no help.
The "programs" icon also has an icon "Turn Windows Features on or off." I
click on that and I get a dialog box "The specified path does not exist."

So defrag is either not installed or not where it should be and Vista wont
let me find nor re-install it!

Or any other feature for that matter.

That I can "search" and run these tools from a command line is little
comfort when all is supposed to be GUI driven.

An "install" would be nice too, as was present in 95/98/me/XT/2k/XP

This Vista installation is seriously wounded.

Any patch or quick fix to align these icons with the applications?

RE: missing links

Did you upgrade from XP - importing your stuff - or did you do a clean
install? If it's an upgrade, it's likely that something broke in the
transition (that's why I don't recommend the upgrade process).

As a workaround, you can create a shortcut to the defragger and use that to
run it.

Re: missing links

Did you have multiple partitions on the drive under XP or has it always been
a single physical drive with a single C: partition?

RE: missing links

IT was an upgrade. I would have chosen a dual boot - but that wasn't an
option.

Many things were updated properly.

But now, with no "install" icon and the "turn windows features on or off"
button also not working, it is VERY difficult to repair this installation.
