is not set up to establish a connection on port"FTP service" with

"kazerothalliance.com" is not set up to establish a connection on port"FTP
service" with this computer.

that is the message i get when trying to go to ftp://kazerothalliance.com
(kids website for gaming) in IE7

I can hit it that way on my two desktops (both with Vista Ultimate, but not
my laptop ((also with Vista Ultimate)) and my work computer that has XP on it)

Ideas, suggestions? I also have the same problem with any geocites sites.

Thanks

Don

Re: is not set up to establish a connection on port"FTP service" with

Normal FTP requires both computers to be servers and clients - one for the
data and one for control. Firewalls and internet sharing may interfere with
this. You don't say what program you are using. Most have options for
Passive mode (where both data channels are client your end). In IE, Tools -
Options - Advanced.

I am not sure what you mean by '' what program I am using '' I am typeing in
ftp://kazerothalliance.com in my address bar in Internet Explorer 7 it
cannont connect on my laptop but it will on all my other pc's with Vista
Ultimate. I diagnose the problem via the link in IE 7 and it gets me the
error of

"kazerothalliance.com" is not set up to establish a connection on port"FTP
service" with this computer.

Re: is not set up to establish a connection on port"FTP service" w

Read my last sentence about settings for IE.

The error message doesn't specify which channel (data or control) it is
refering to. If this computer means your computer then it is referring to
the control channel and setting FTP to passive will fix this.

Otherwise turn your firewall off, or if using ICS set up port forwarding
(and turn your firewall off or configure an exception). Easier to use
passive mode.

Servers are programs that wait for clients to initiate conversations. This
is true beyond thye internet.

FTP works by the client (your machine) initiating a conversation with a
server (which is just sitting there waiting for you or anyone). Unusual for
most internet protocols, FTP requires the server to act as a client as well
as a server and to initiate a conversation with your computer which your
firewall will block. With passive FTP your computer will be client for both
channels.
