How can I upgrade from Vista RC1 to release version

Hi,

Recently I got Vista RC1 DVD from Microsoft. I upgraded my PC to VISTA. At
the bottom of the desktop it is showing as
"Windows Vista (TM) RC1
Evaluation Copy. Build 5600"

The version is going to expire in another 2 months. I got licence key and
S/W of release version. How can I upgrade it?

Don't suggest to format and install S/W once again .

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Regards,
-Ravi

Well, that's exactly what you'll need to do when going
from a beta version to a released version of an operating system.

Re: How can I upgrade from Vista RC1 to release version

Hi Ravi,

Provided that your release version is of Ultimate (like the beta/RC builds),
then you can install it over your existing installation as an upgrade.
However, it has to be a full version disk as the RC's do not qualify for
upgrade rights, e4ven if you originally upgraded an existing XP/2000 system.
If your release version is any other, say Home Premium, Basic, Business,
etc., then the *only* solution is the one you do not want to hear.

Re: How can I upgrade from Vista RC1 to release version

Hi, I also run TM RC1 Evaluation Copy 5600 Build.

I ordered, from a site on Microsoft's Upgrade page, and received the upgrade
package (DVD). Since there was a slight delay in delivery I was a day late
and a dollar short in receiving and installing. I did get everything backed
up and ready, I thought.

The computer would do it's rebooting as was warned. I thought nothing of
this and knew as soon as I used the upgrade DVD I would be fine, bu that was
not the case.

Received the DVD on June 1st.
I start the upgrade...all goes well...

On the Install Window ...
Copying Files completed ...
Gathering Files got as far as 50% or so...
Seems box rebooted and went to my Sign-In page (old version RC1 Evaluation
Copy Build 5600).

So after reading your post here I am feeling as if I made a very expensive
purchase and will not be able to upgrade from what I am running to what I
purchased. Is this correct?

I am now going to the Help and either email, chat or phone support.

Re: How can I upgrade from Vista RC1 to release version

Not sure I understand the question, but you should be able to do a clean
install with the upgrade DVD.
That way, it doesn't matter that RC1 has timebombed and is no longer
useable.

Does that help at all? Or did I answer a question you didn't ask?

Re: How can I upgrade from Vista RC1 to release version

DP,
I ended up having to do a Custom Install recommended by a tech. This was
good though, even if I have to look for some items that have gone missing,
because I was able to use the Upgrade copy and didn't have to buy full
version. Thanks for the reply.

Re: How can I upgrade from Vista RC1 to release version

Just FYI: From everything I've heard, you can do a full, clean install from
an upgrade disk.

Glad to hear you've got it working.
