I'm guessing D is not physically a second drive but probably just a
partition where recovery data is stored.

1 physical drive, looks to be 100gb.
Two partitions, one of which is your recovery partition which is where the
original software for your computer is "backed up".

One hard disk, two partitions.
The second one, is to recover you PC should you trash it.
It will allow you to revert it back to the factory settings.

There is only one hard drive in your computer. That hard drive has been partitioned into two drives.
Your Recovery (D) drive is where the files necessary for restoring your computer to a factory
setup are located. Consult your computer manufacturer's documentation, their help files, or their
online documentation for instructions on how to use Recovery options.

There's a difference between two physical drives and two drive letter
parititons. It appears the "D" is some kind of restore portion. Let me
make a wild guess, you bought a Dell or Gateway right?
Don't mess with the "D" partition if that's so. It contains files that
will help restore your computer to it's original state if you mess
something up.
With all that being said ... Recheck the stuff you got with the computer -
ten bucks they didn't send you any recovery CD's with your new system - you
need to make them yourself.
Probably should consider doing that before your entire hard drive is
trashed - if D is a partition and the hard drive goes toes up where are you
going to recover your system from?

It will be the recovery partition for restoring the rest of C: to
factory condition.
Check any instructions you may have or if necessary ask Gateway if
there is a procedure for extracting one set of recovery media from that
partition so that if your hard drive goes down you can actually do
something!
If not investigate making an image of the hard drive that you can
restore if necessary.
