Vista Protected Mode

The note at the bottom of the IE7 screen indicates that the "Protected Mode
Off", However the box for the Protected Mode is checked to be enabled in the
secutity tab. How to correct this?

Protected mode relies on UAC, so if you've turned that off or disabled it
it'll also disable protected mode.

Re: Vista Protected Mode

While Protected mode does rely upon UAC I also have a strange feeling that
it is somewhat 'buggy'. I have UAC enabled and have encountered on a number
of occasions the 'Protected Mode Off' issue. I know i bugged it enough time
in the beta tests. The problem is it isn't consistent. A week or two can go
by without any issue, then the next time you open Internet explorer you get
the Protected mode off message. It's certainly wierd.

Re: Vista Protected Mode

Protected mode is turned off when UAC is turned off. If you have turned
it off, then Protected mode is going to be off. To turn it back on, you
would need to reenable UAC.

If you do have it enabled and it's still not working, let us know and we
can look into it more!

Re: Vista Protected Mode

Although I think that has happened to me once before, the majority of the
time it says protected mode is off it is running a local file or a trusted
site.

Try this instead of disabling UAC. It makes UAC much less intrusive and
easier to live with, and you get Protected Mode running too.

Re: Vista Protected Mode

John

Is there a way to turn off UAC (which is a nuisance) and not show a
Windows Security Alert in the Notification Area. I want to see
Security Alerts but not because I have turned off UAC!

Re: Vista Protected Mode

Open security center, on the left pane at the bottom, click "Change the way
security center alerts me", then in the dialog that appears, click the
bottom option "don't notify me and don't display an icon".

Open Security Center in Control Panel. In the left menu, click "Change the
way Security Center alerts me". You will see the options there.
