Safe downloads

I just got a new laptop and I managed to corrupt the whole system,
because I failed to set up my Norton Security program, before entering
an unsecure site, now I am experiencing technical problems left, right
and centre, which I have no clue to solving. Apart from this, I have
just realised that the files I originally had on my Acer, have
disappeared and to my disbelief, have noticed that the whole package
didn't come office ready with the program that I need, Word for
Vista, so I can complete my assignments for college.

How do I configure my system or protect it, so when I enter an
unsecure site, I wont be intruded by Viruses, Trojans, Worms and
Spyware and my OS wont shut down and wipe all my software, files or
programs with it ?

How do I download a safe version of Word 07 for Vista Home Premium, I
don't use the other office programs such as Powerpoint, Outlook etc ?

I would appreciate any help, advice or tips that I can get to start
surfing and working without the added stress of inviting bugs onto my
system. Thanks again for taking the time to read this request.

Re: Safe downloads

I also just bought a new computer with Vista.
One. I connected to the Internet through a router/firewall.
Two. I downloaded the free AVG Anti-virus http://free.grisoft.com
Three. Disconnected from the Internet
Four. Uninstalled all Symantec and Norton products
Five: Installed and updated the AVG Anti-virus
Once AVG is installed scan your computer. May solve your problems.
You will have to buy Microsoft Word. However, you could download and install
an excellent free open source alternative: OpenOffice
http://www.openoffice.org

Re: Safe downloads

If you posted this call from your laptop, then it must be working.

1. The best solution concerning your unsecure sites is don't go to them.
Failing that, setup your Norton Security before you do anything else. Part
of the NAV setup is a scan of your system before it finished installing it's
software.
2. A quick way to test for Viruses, etc. is run:
http://www.trendsecure.com/free_secu..._free_scan.php
This isn't meant as a replacement for an onboard program like NAV. It's
just the quickest way you can test for Viruses.
3. There are programs out there that say they can recover corrupted/lost
data. You might want to give one of them a try AFTER you setup and run your
NAV program. Also, run the Update function of NAV so you have the latest
patches.
4. If your "software bundle CD" doesn't have MS Word. You can purchase it
separately.
You might checkout this link:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/se...rocess=default
Note: Buying MS Word by itself will cost you almost as much as buying MS
Office and you never know when an application like Excel might help you with
one of your courses.

Well, that should get you started. College is meant to prepare you for
life. Consider this an extension of one of your college lessons.
Viruses, etc. are real and they can bit.

Good luck with school and your laptop.

RE: Safe downloads

If you are a student, you might find that buying the Student Version of the
MS Office Suite is a more attractive alternative than buying MS Word by
itself.

I have a buddy that took some online classes and to "pinch a penny" went
open source with Open Office and the prof couldn't read his documents. I'm
not an open source expert, but that might not be a viable solution for you.
But, since its free, you can always give it a shot. I would try downloading
it and making a test run, before I let my grades rest on it.
