| | Re: "windows explorer has stopped working" 1 minute after buying a new machine Yes I can take it back to the shop but I have 28 days to do that. One person saying that was enough, although frankly it's was pretty obvious anyway. What I was really hoping is that someone knows why so many people get the "windows explorer has stopped working" bug and how to go about fixing it. I have looked on the net but there are so many people with the problem and in general the advice offered on forums such as this is so poor I can not find the answer (if there even is one). Look on Goolgle: ["windows explorer has stopped working" vista] returns 498 hits on the web. Sorry to be insulting but when some retard suggest a reinstall after you open by saying the problem occurs immediately on first time use setup before you have even connected to the internet or installed everything anything etc then its frustrating. Look at this post from phil: Repy to MSVP who said VISTA is great, it was Sony's fault as OEM, and I should contact them: You Bill Gates ? Jesus wept man - you're ranting at the bloke after he's asked for advice. Don't be such a prat., podge42 Bill - maybe a driver. Maybe just do a system restore (I doubt its even necessary) and reboot. Try again, and I'll bet it'll go straight in. This kind of thing happens to me all the time. Currently it's "No audio Why does a FOOL like this bother coming on here??? It's like there are a bunch of thick people running round this forum with nothing better to do that fight it out of how rubbish or how good Vista is (frankly I can get the answer to that in the press more objectively - they say Vista is a pig to install and compatibility is terrible and sales are poor - although surprisingly they like Aero which I personally think is unimpressive at best and even arguably ugly). It would be better for the world if people only replied to posts when they have something to say that is midly interesting. So please dear forum members... if you are as thick as hell don't bother writing.... If you are American and therefore quite optimistic lets move the standard for you to: please don't post unless you are really really smart and know everything about computers and have just the answer to the question the guy is asking... |

On page 10 of the current edition of PC Plus there is an article about r DirectX which mentions that a Robert Preston, BBC Business Editor wrote a letter to Bill Gates after buying a bug ridden Vista laptop. http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereport...rt_peston.html http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereport...rt_peston.html -- Michael Chare |

| | Re: "windows explorer has stopped working" 1 minute after buying a new machine That's very cool... will take to the shop and hope it helps in the refund claim. My only fear is they might say "hey it's a sony and it's running vista - it's not supposed to work" |

| | Re: "windows explorer has stopped working" 1 minute after buying a new machine On Wed, 28 Mar 2007 13:31:14 +0100, "Michael Chare" >On page 10 of the current edition of PC Plus there is an article about r >DirectX >which mentions that a Robert Preston, BBC Business Editor wrote a letter to >Bill Gates after buying a bug ridden Vista laptop. > >http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereport...rt_peston.html > >http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereport...rt_peston.html As soon as someone "writes to Bill Gates" about an MS product, I tune out. Trust me, Bill Gates does not personally write each line of Microsoft code, least of all with the intention to annoy you in particular. I often wonder if he misses coding... The first half of this letter simply says "I don't like the way Vista looks", or "I don't like the way any Windows looks", with a bit of "Vista ought to look more like the Mac". What kind of egocentric nut would write to Bill Gates just to say he doesn't like the way something "looks"? What kind of objective technical content is there to pass on to anyone who can make a difference, i.e. the techs who actually *make* this stuff? The second half of the letter - assuming "Bill Gates" is still reading, at this stage - goes on to complain that a device that predates Vista doesn't work with Vista, and that another device doesn't interoperate with it. The first is "duh, get new drivers" whereas the second is a more realistic concern. So let's see - it it really the duty of an ex-chairman of a corporation to personally explain reasonable expectations to a single end-user, or is this "letter to Bill Gates" just a bit of grand-standing? Nothing wrong with grand-standing, it just looks silly to pretend it really is a letter addressed to a particular individual. But I guess that's what Bill Gates has to put up with as a side-effect of his use as a "branding symbol". >--------------- ----- ---- --- -- - - - I'd love to help you out. Which way did you come in? >--------------- ----- ---- --- -- - - - |

| | RE: "windows explorer has stopped working" 1 minute after buying a new People.... this is not an issue being dealt with by a few people. I've built many desktops with a variety of OS and configurations. When I tried the Upgrade Install of Vista Home Premium I was stunned that there were any kinks at all based on software reviews. "Flawless installation" I read, "smooth transition" was another. I have struggled for 4 days to get my computer back up and running. 3 hours today with HP, 3 hours tonight with Microsft. I can't even get into and area that will allow me to reformat my system. Both the Microsoft Rep (who was dumbfounded) and the HP Rep who tried everything he knew for over 3 hours before giving up said they had dealt with this issue without resolution many times per day. At present, I have no way to access the partition that stores my recovery system. This is by far the worst experience I've had upgrading and by far the most techs I've encountered who were unable to offer any reason for the situation or any possible fixes for the state of affairs here on my desk. I have no idea what to do. HELP! "william.hooper@gmail.com" wrote: > Ok, I just bought a £2,000 sony laptop (that's $4,000 US). | | Re: "windows explorer has stopped working" 1 minute after buying a new machine So in the Problem Reports and Solutions Center, what data does it have about the crash there? The crash bucket number may be of value: http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#bucket -- Speaking for myself only. See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info. Ok, I just bought a £2,000 sony laptop (that's $4,000 US). I started it up... waited for the first use setup process to go through... selected uk keyboard etc... then changed the explorer view to classic and tried to drag and drop windows explorer from accessories to the top of the start menu and it crashed. I am not kidding this was the first thing I ever ever did with this new machine. Now I know Vista is a pile of junk but for gods sake this is going to far. What do I do know? Call Sony five minutes after turning on the machine? Does anyone know a fix for this? |
