Windows Mail

Windows Mail shows that the inbox, and sent box are empty, but they should
contain plenty, and if I look in the "local folders" folder where they should
be, they are there, but windows mail does not report their existence. Help!

Re: Windows Mail

Back up what you have before attempting a recovery:
http://www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx#WM

I don't think repairing the database will work, but you could try it:

Ask for help in the group that specializes in Windows Mail:

Re: Windows Mail

In Windows Mail, Tools, Options, Advanced, Maintenance, Store folder, one is
lead to believe that messages are "stored" in the location:
users\name\application data\local\microsoft\windows mail\local folders\inbox.
But they aren't....try several directories lower on the same tree. After
recovering mail from local folders (2) the files were written to
users\name\application data\local\microsoft\windows mail\local
folders\inbox\imported Fo ed3\RecoveredMb8c\03-15-2007 179\Local Folde
4C8\Inbox. The Vista search result does not give the correct name of the
directory - those files are so buried.....AAARRRGGGHHH - I like simple better.

Re: Windows Mail

You can move the message store. A highly visible place on a
non-system drive is ideal for improved performance and stability.

I also dislike the amount of hiding and elaboration in Vista, but in the
good old days your messages would have been unrecoverable. OE
had a bad habit of sometimes destroying its entire message store.
With the OE message store moved, this was less likely to occur.

First create a new, empty store folder in your chosen place. Then
Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store folder, then click the Change
button and Browse to the new Message Store folder. Modify these
instructions for doing this with OE to suit Vista's WinMail:
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/backup/clone.htm#prep
Since Windows Contacts replaces WAB in Vista, omit that folder.
