Vista Search is MUCH SLOWER than Desktop Search of MSN or Google

Microsoft should have a search technology in Vista that is better than MSN
Desktop Search or at least equivelant!!. Unfortunately, MSN Desktop Search
was way better than Vista Search in all aspects: performance, accuracy,
showing results, etc. I don't know what is wrong with the development team!
It seems to me they are using a totally different search technology than the
great MSN Desktop Search technology! Why don't they just use the same
technology rather than starting over from the scratch?! I don't know..

The way I used to browse search results under MSN Desktop Search was MUCH
BETTER than the search results window in Vista. Additionally, Vista Search is
EXTREMELY SLOW compared to MSN Desktop Search! (In many cases searching for
documents manually is much faster!!!).

The worst part is the incompatibility between MSN Desktop Search and Vista!
It just does not install on Vista. So, you've got two options only: the very
slow Vista Search or the un-integrated but VERY FAST Google Desktop Search!
Oh sorry, there is a third option: Go back to Windows XP and use MSN Desktop
Search.

As a VERY HEAVY MSN Desktop Search user, I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED with Vista
Search. I know that many people will be stunned by Vista Search because most
of them never used a desktop search technology! But I bet that Google Desktop
users will continue using Google Desktop Search even if they upgrade to
Vista. But MSN Desktop users (like me and you) will see themselves under very
tough "search" situation: very slow Vista, un-integrated Google or back to XP!

From this Discussion Group I AM ASKING WINDOWS VISTA TEAM to compare the
performance of Vista Search to MSN Desktop Search or even to Google Desktop
Search. Remember, In search, performance is EVERYTHING.You guys need to
squeeze the performance to the maximum. You need to get VERY SMART algorithms
to handle search! I know you can do it! But you MUST do it very fast because
people will not wait forever!

That has been my experience. As much as I like Vista, Google Desktop is
always faster and it works great on XP.

Good information. Now I know for sure why I won't run Vista. I am
now using the Windows desktop search and it seems to run well. The
Google was doing great and then crashed. I don't know what wrong with
it, but I think that they are having a problem with trying to make it
too cute. Just do a nice quick clean search and forget all the
extras. They are not required in desktop search.

RE: Vista Search is MUCH SLOWER than Desktop Search of MSN or Google

You are wrong. Vista search is not MUCH SLOWER!!! It is VERY VERY MUCH
SLOWER!! And when eventually the results (email) do show up, I get them
twice!!!! This happens when you move an incoming message to a folder. The
“vista search” finds the email in the inbox (which does not exist there
anymore, because you have moved it) plus in the folder you moved it to. To
avoid this you need to rebuild the index every day before you go to bed!!!!!

This was a problem that I encountered in January that I bought the vista. I
went back to XP and I thought that 10 months later this problem would have
been resolved. I was wrong!!! This means I will reinstall XP again.

The WDS for XP it is 1000000 times better and I would very much like to ask
those who developed the instant (ha ha ha) search in vista what did they
really have in mind????
Not only was WDS for XP way faster but you could easily isolate different
results (contacts - Appointments - notes - etc) with just one click!!!!!

Can someone with access to Microsoft’s developers ask this for me? And also
ask them to make the wds for xp also possible to be installed in vista???

Here in Greece we say: “vista is svista” and svista means “uninstall
it”!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately you figure this out after the money you spend to buy it!!!
(along with the money you spend to upgrade your hardware and software because
mostly nothing works with it)

Re: Vista Search is MUCH SLOWER than Desktop Search of MSN or Google

I'm indexing over 200 thousand items and my results are nearly
instantaneous, just for a comparison.

Perhaps you've installed an incompatible filter?

Also try configuring the Indexing Options in Control Panel, maybe its
indexing just a bit too much. :P

Re: Vista Search is MUCH SLOWER than Desktop Search of MSN or Goog

Hi!

Thanks for replying but I have not installed any filters and in the indexing
options I have only my pst files and a couple of local folders --> not on the
network. That’s all!

And what about the duplicated emails? When you move an incoming message from
your inbox to a folder and you search for it, do you only get a result in the
folder you have moved it to or you also get it in your inbox like I do?

Not to mention that there is no way to convenient isolate the results by
file type, as it was the case with WDS for XP, where with just one click you
could only find doc, contacts, xls attachments etc!!

It would have been fine if I hadn’t worked with WDS, which was just perfect!!!

Regards,
Christos
