Screen flickers when UAC dialog pops up

I've just installed Vista 64 on my machine, whith a nvidia 7600 card. Aero
is running and pooks nice, but why does the entire screen go black for a
split second just before a UAC dialog pops up?

Re: Screen flickers when UAC dialog pops up

That's part of the Secure Desktop Prompting. makes sure you know that
something is up and that Windows needs your attention

Jeremy

The screen dimming is part of the UAC prompt. It's called the Secure
Desktop. It prevents any action from taking place until the UAC prompt is
taken care of.

Re: Screen flickers when UAC dialog pops up

Do you know if it's by design for the language toolbar to appear on the
Secure Desktop instead of the User Desktop? I know it's an OS toolbar, but
it seems to me that there's potential for an unauthorized app to sit on the
Secure Desktop & give the user a false sense of security

Re: Screen flickers when UAC dialog pops up

Yes, but it doesn't dim. What happens is the entire screen goes completely
black for 1/2 a second or so, then the screen comes back with the UAC dialog
displayed. I would have thought that the UAC dialog would display and the
rest of the screen would just fade to the dimmer look. The black flicker
doesn't look good and I doubt it is intended design.

Re: Screen flickers when UAC dialog pops up

Hi Keith

I imagine the Language Toolbar is there in case a different language is
needed for the UAC prompt. If a password for an administrator is needed for
the UAC prompt and it is set in a different language than the language
currently selected, you would be inexplicably locked out of completing the
UAC prompt.

RE: Screen flickers when UAC dialog pops up

I get the same thing, but then a fading pop-up box that says "display driver
nvlddmkm stopped reponding and has recovered." Search this forum as well as
hardware/devices for nvlddmkm and you'll get plenty of hits. No known
solution at this point, although one poster has found something that worked
fro him but requires some fiddling that shouldn't be necessary (and didn't
work for me).

I'm running Ultimate 64 with nvidia Ge Force 7900.

Re: Screen flickers when UAC dialog pops up

This doesn't sound normal? Does the screen still dim after the 1/2 second
blackout?

The dimming is the result of the secure desktop module which builds a
transparent blended bitmap and then overlays the screen with this image.

My best guess would be a video card issue. Check to make sure you have the
latest drivers.

You might also want to check in the event viewer for any possible errors.

Let us know what you find.

Re: Screen flickers when UAC dialog pops up

Yes, the screen is dim after the blackout, which is correct behavior,
preventing interaction with anything other than the dialog. But the
Blackout is not correct behavior. I've downloaded the latest drivers for my
nVidia Geforce 7600 GT - Version 7.15.11.65 dated 10/02/2007.

Re: Screen flickers when UAC dialog pops up

Jeremy

That's good, at least it is not interferring with the secure desktop module.
I'll pass this information along.
