| | Microsoft XPS Document Writer Issue Hi: Apparently when I installed the update Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 it installed the Microsoft XPS Document Writer. I am still running Windows Media Center 2005 and have not upgraded to Vista. Until now the only way that I knew MS XPS Document Viewer was installed was when I opened Printers and Faxes and saw the icon. After further research I found the MS update apparently installed it. I have a MS Works .XLR file that I have no problem opening, but now I cannot print this file by going to File>Print. It hangs the .XLR file screen up (Not Responding) and will not print. I finally found the only way that I can now print the .XLR file is to open the file and then click on the Printer Icon in the Toolbar to print the document or file. It will print OK from the icon. Does anyone know what is causing this disparity now in my ability to print a .XLR file? Also how can I resolve this issue? Thanks |

| | Re: Microsoft XPS Document Writer Issue I'm researching this some more, but the reason you see a different behavior with the File, Print dialog as opposed to the Print button (icon) is most likely because, when you open the File, Print dialog, Works is interacting with each of the printer drivers installed on your computer, including the XPS Document Writer. When you use the Print button (icon), Works only interacts with the driver for the printer currently selected as the "default printer". It would seem that Works is having some difficulty with one of the printer drivers you have, one of which is the XPS Document Writer. What version of Works are you using? -- Bruce Sanderson MVP Printing http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders It is perfectly useless to know the right answer to the wrong question. | | Re: Microsoft XPS Document Writer Issue It seems that the product teams in Microsoft have an interest in your problem, but need some additional details to try and diagnose it. 1. Can you post a (small!) document that you have this problem with as a attacment to your reply? 2. What make and model of printer(s) do you have? Are they locally attached (parallel, USB?) or networked (e.g. shared from another computer)? 3. Which printer is selected as your "default printer" (e.g. in Start, Printers and Faxes)? 4. When you click File, Print, exactly what happens (e.g. does the print dialog box appear or not?) and do you take any other actions before it locks up and goes Not Responding? 5. list the steps you take after clicking File, Print so you can later click the Printer Icon in the Toolbar -- Bruce Sanderson MVP Printing http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders It is perfectly useless to know the right answer to the wrong question.
