My phone call with Microsoft. (Refund)

After my troubles with Vista, I decided I wanted refund.

I phoned Microsoft's refund line at 1-888-673-8624

Here is the conversation (from Memory)

Quote:
Rep: Thank you for calling Microsoft Refund Line my name is [so & so], how can I help you?

Me: I want a refund.

Rep: Ok and what product are you seeking a refund on?

Me: Windows Vista Ultimate Ed. 64 bit.

Rep: Ok what we need you to do is mail us the product along with your reciept and a letter stating your name, address, and phone # and that you would like a refund. Send it to:
Microsoft Product Returns
2031 Burroughs Ave.
San Leandro, CA
94577

Me: So what happens once you guys get it?

Rep: Once we recieve your package we'll issue you a refund check within 30 days.

Me: (surprised at the ease of this all so far, and the lack of any attempt to problem solve whatever issue I may be having.) Oh ok. Thanks.
I got the feeling from listening to the guy's voice that I was the 263rd person that day to call for a refund on Vista. I decided to go fishing...

Quote:
Me: So how did you know I wasn't calling to return a keyboard? How did you know it was Vista?

Rep: (laughs) Ha! That's a trick question! You told me at the begining of the call what product you wanted to return.

Me: Oh yeah. I forgot. Ok thanks. Bye.

Rep: Thank you for calling Microsoft.
He definately was wary of giving out any kind of hint on what amount of calls they're fielding for returns on Vista.

Some how I doubt this refund will be as easy as it sounds. We'll see.

Once I get my money back I'm using it to go towards an 8 core Mac.
After 12 blindly faithful years... I'm done with MS.

The funny part is - it wasn't Apple that convinced me to switch. It was Microsoft.

Re: My phone call with Microsoft. (Refund)

Well, look at it this way, you can get maintenance update for XP until 2008,
mainstream support for XP Pro until 2012.

Re: My phone call with Microsoft. (Refund)

I avoided the refund process altogether. I tested the August Beta.
After using it for one week, I formatted the hard drive. I used one
partition for Windows Xp and the rest of the hard drive for PCLINUXOS.
Since I do not use Windows XP for graphics intensive games, I recently
moved my licensed copy to a virtual machine. I have not regretted my
decision.

So you're in here complaining about Vista after only using a beta?

Ok...

Re: My phone call with Microsoft. (Refund)

I wasn't complaining. I saw that I did not like it, and as owner/
operator of this computer I decided that I would try something else.
What gave you the idea that Vista was out of Beta?

Support for 64-bit Vista hasn't really "baked in" yet. That's why I'm
waiting a while for the driver base to mature before purchasing a new PC.
I think I remember reading somewhere that to be Vista logoed a company has
to develop a x64 driver first: developing x86 is optional. This should
drive x64 support.

Re: My phone call with Microsoft. (Refund)

You should try the RTM, its way more stable than the 5xxx pre RC1 build.

Re: My phone call with Microsoft. (Refund)

I still have the DVD here somewhere. I could reinstall it if I wanted to
in a virtual machine, but what would be the point. I didn't like it. I
have worked on other people's computers that do have it and my opinion
hasn't changed. It sucked then and it still sucks. Please note: I said
that this was my opinion. Interestingly enough, this is still my
machine. I paid for it and no operating system is going to undermine
what I can do on my own machine. I do not want to rely on an operating
system that just decides not to work one day, because I change a hard
drive, or install a game program. I do not want an operating system that
decides to reduce the quality of the output without any input from me.
You, of course, are free to use it and maybe I will learn more on this
newsgroup, so I can help others use it, who are unfortunate enough to
have it installed as the primary operating system on their machine. And
then again, maybe they will be frustrated enough, that they will want me
to install a different operating system. Something that is actually user
friendly.
